• John Champe HS College Application Process 2023-24

    • Step 1: Ensure your parent/guardian submits a one time Transcript Release form through Permission Click.
      • We cannot send your transcript to a college without this being submitted first.
      • This is a one-time release for any future college and/or scholarship applications. Even if you have not yet finalized your college list, your parents can submit this release form so that we can send your transcript once you are ready to do so.
      • If you are 18 years old, you may submit a release on your own but otherwise a parent/guardian must submit it.
      • Please submit the release at least 3 weeks prior to your earliest college application deadline.

    • Step 2: Log into SchooLinks, Complete Onboarding Activity and Search, Finalize your College List & Research Requirements
    • If you have not yet logged into SchooLinks, you will need to access SchooLinks and complete the onboarding career activity.
    • Identify the colleges to which you will apply. SchooLinks has a College Search Tool you can use to find and explore schools that meet your needs, interests, and that will allow you to thrive
    • We encourage you to apply to at least 5 colleges, with a balance of likely, target, and reach schools. You can use the SchooLinks "Admissions stats" tool to learn more about how your GPA and test score compare to average admitted students.  Once you add colleges to your final list in SchooLinks, you will also be able to see them organized as reach, target, and likely schools.
    • Once you have identified your final list of colleges, research the admissions requirements by visiting the college's undergraduate admissions page and looking at Common App.

    • Step 3: Setup Your Common App Account & Add Applications to SchooLinks
      • Many colleges use Common App for their college application. If you are applying to a college using Common App, set up your account at www.commonapp.org
      • Once you've created a Common App account, add the colleges to your account and sign the FERPA waiver.
      • Link your Common App with SchooLinks so that your counselor can send your transcript and teachers can send letters of recommendation.
      • Review Requesting Transcripts in SchooLinks
      • If you are not applying through Common App and instead using the Coalition App or the college's unique application portal, please add the college application to SchooLinks so that we can send your transcript.

    • Step 4: Request Letters of Recommendation
      • Teacher Letters of Recommendation
        • First, speak with the teacher in-person at least 3 weeks before your earliest college application deadline to ask if they could write you a letter of recommendation.

    • Step 5: Send your SAT and/or ACT Scores
      • Determine if your college(s) have test-optional admissions review, or if an SAT or ACT score is needed to apply.  You can find this information on the college's undergraduate admission website.
      • If a college is test-optional and you're unsure of whether to send your scores, please speak with your school counselor or our Career Center Assistant, Mrs. King.
      • If you need or choose to send your test scores to a college, you must do so directly through the testing organization. LCPS does not send scores to colleges. Please request your score report to be sent at least 3 weeks prior to the college application deadline to avoid having your application marked as incomplete.
        • SAT scores must be sent directly by College Board
        • ACT scores must be sent directly by ACT.

    • Step 6: Complete Your College Applications by the Deadline
      • Pay careful attention to deadlines and ensure your application is submitted in advance of the deadline.  It can take several weeks for colleges to mark all the supplemental materials (i.e., transcripts, recommendations) as received.
