Schedule Change Process for 2023-2024

  • The deadline for all course request changes was May 1, 2023. We do the best we can to consider changes when looking at the school as a whole, class sizes, potential enrollments, and other needs to best support student achievement. We seek to honor the thoughtful process students, parents/guardians, teachers, and counselors took to ensure students selected an appropriate and balanced schedule.

Please keep the following considerations in mind:

    • Requests for specific teachers or class periods will not be considered.
    • Schedule changes may not be possible if the course is considered full and seats are not available.
    • Schedule changes may require multiple class and teacher changes to the schedule.
    • Counselors will review graduation requirements and progress before schedule changes are considered.
    • If a schedule change is approved, the student is responsible for any missed work that the new teacher deems necessary.
    • All grades in the current course will transfer to the new course.
    • No schedule changes will be considered after March 1 (interim time of 3rd quarter per the LCPS Program of Studies).
    • A request for a schedule change does not guarantee that a change will be made.
    • All schedule changes are final and cannot be reversed.
    • Grading implications for dropped courses:
      • Full Year Courses
        • 1st quarter - courses dropped will not be counted in GPA or class rank
        • 2nd & 3rd quarter - WP or WF is recorded for courses dropped and will not be counted in GPA or class rank
        • 4th quarter - WP or F is recorded for courses dropped, for an F, it will be calculated into GPA and class rank
      • Semester Courses
        • 1st quarter - courses dropped will not be counted in GPA or class rank
        • 2nd quarter - WP or F is recorded for courses dropped, for an F, it will be calculated into GPA and class rank
  • September 4 - 22, 2023

From September 4 - September 22, 2023 we will consider elective course changes on a space available basis only. We will not consider academic core course changes during this time.  Students need to see their school counselor to obtain a Schedule Change Request Form.

We will not consider academic core course level changes (i.e. AP to Honors, Honors to Academic) during this time, with the following exceptions:

    • Changes to an entirely different core course discipline, when such an option exists. For example, if a student wishes to change from AP Calculus AB to AP Statistics or Physics to Environmental Science, we may consider this change if space is available in the requested course so that the student does not miss further instructional time and content in the new subject.
    • Students enrolled in a dual enrollment (DE) course that wish to drop and have the course not show on their college transcript must drop the course by 11:59 pm on September 15, 2023 per college policies. If the non-DE course the student is requesting to switch to (i.e. academic, honors, or AP) is full, it will go to an administrator for consideration and review. DE courses dropped after September 15 will be considered a withdraw and a grade of "W" (withdraw) will show on the student's college transcript.

  • September 25, 2023 - March 1, 2024

From September 25, 2023 - March 1, 2024 we will consider academic core course level changes (i.e. honors to academic) or drops on a space available basis only. If space is not available, the request will be forwarded to administration for consideration.

Any elective course change requests will only be considered for a change to a study hall, not a different elective. Students need to see their school counselor to obtain a Schedule Change Request Form. Parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss their concerns directly with the teacher of the course.

Prior to submitting a Schedule Change Request Form, it is expected that the student will give the course a good faith effort, as demonstrated by:

    • Consistent, timely, and reasonable attempts on all assignments and assessments
    • Taking advantage of opportunities for retakes to improve grades on assessments
    • Early and consistent communication with the teacher to discuss concerns and strategies for success
    • Taking advantage of additional support, such as meeting with the teacher for assistance in understanding content or participating in peer tutoring
