Governor's School

  • Are you currently a high school sophomore or junior? If so, you should consider applying to the 2024 Virginia Summer Residential Governor’s Schools.

    The Virginia Summer Residential Governor’s Schools are approximately four weeks long and are held each summer on various college and university campuses throughout Virginia. The Governor’s Schools offer students a unique opportunity to work and study not only with other students with similar talents and interests, but also with mentors, professors, scientists, and other professionals in their field of interest.

    All Applicants:

    The Virginia Summer Residential Governor's School website should be updated in October 2023. Do not begin the application process until the 2024 applications appear on the website.

  • As of 2024, the areas of study are:

    • Agriculture (held at Virginia Tech)
    • Humanities (held at Radford University)
    • Math, Science, and Technology (held at Lynchburg College)
    • Visual and Performing Arts (held at Radford University)
  • As of 2024, mentorships are available in:

    • Marine Science (held at Christopher Newport University)
    • Engineering (held at Christopher Newport University)
  • Application Process

    • ALL APPLICANTS: All applications are found on the VDOE Summer Residential Governor’s School website. Please see our 2024 SRGS How to Apply document found on the LCPS Governor’s School website for directions. Heritage applications are due to Mr. Wareham by Friday, December 8, 2023.

    • Visual and Performing Arts applicants must also complete the following steps:

      • Participate in the LCPS Preliminary Audition on October 30, 2023. Audition requirements for the LCPS preliminary audition are found on the LCPS Gifted and Talented Governor’s School webpage.
      • Register online for the Preliminary Audition by October 23, 2023.
      • Registration Form is found on the LCPS Gifted Education Website, Governor’s School webpage
      • Students selected by the local judges will go on to the State Auditions, held in January 2024.

     

    • ALL LCPS APPLICATIONS are read, scored, and ranked by a committee in early February 2024. Applicants are then ranked by total score, highest to lowest. VPA applicants are ranked separately. Nomination quotas are filled according to rank. Applications of nominees are forwarded to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). The VDOE makes admission decisions and students are notified by email after mid-April 2024.
  • Important Dates

    • September 25, 2023 - Registration Opens for LCPS Preliminary VPA Auditions
    • October 6, 2023 - VDOE Summer Residential Govenor's School website should show updated information for the 2023-2024 school year
    • October 23, 2023 - Audition Registration Deadline for LCPS Preliminary VPA Auditions
    • October 30, 2023 - LCPS Preliminary Auditions held in-person at Briar Woods HS. Auditions are by appointment
    • November 8, 2023 - ALL LCPS VPA students who participated in the local audition are notified of their state audition time and place
    • Mid-December 2023 - Successful Visual and Performing Arts applicants are notified of their results via email
    • December 10, 2023 - ALL APPLICATIONS (both Academic and VPA) due to Mr. Wareham in the School Counseling Office.
    • January 2024 - State Auditions for Visual and Performing Arts applicants. Dates and Locations are TBA.
    • February 9, 2024 - Letters emailed to LCPS students notifying them of their application status. Successful applicants are nominated for admission and their applications are forwarded to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
    • April 15, 2024 - ALL nominees are notified by email of their admission status by the VDOE on or around this date.
