Welcome to First Grade!
My name is Liz Gillett and I'm so excited to be a first grade teacher for my third year here at Meadowland.
I grew up in Tampa, Florida where my sister and I were raised by two educators. My mom is still an elementary school counselor and my dad is a retired high school English teacher. My family is very important to me so I love to go back to visit often.
I left Florida to move to Boulder, Colorado in 2014 where I attended the University of Colorado. In college, I majored in Psychology and was a game day and competitive cheerleader on the Co-Ed team.
My teaching career began after graduation when I started working at the elementary school I attended as a student. I began as a special education assisstant in a first grade classroom. I enjoyed spending time with and teaching students so much that I went back to school to become licensed to be a teacher. I began as a special education teacher, then moved into the general education classroom for my second year. I have taught 1st and 2nd grade, but 1st is my favorite!
Now, I live with my fiance and our two dogs, Poppy and Scooby. I will be getting married in Virginia in April 2024 - my new last name will be Marich, but for the rest of this year I will still be Ms. Gillett. My fiance works for D.C. United as an analyst so I am a big D.C. United fan and love to go to soccer games. My dogs are like my children for now, so I frequently tell stories about them in class. Poppy is a 5-year-old Corgi and Scooby is a German Shepherd puppy who will turn 1 next March. On the weekends, I enjoy practicing and competing in Agility trials with my corgi, Poppy. We recently attended our first competition and won 1st place in our division.
I love to learn new things! I frequently try new hobbies and visit new places. On school holidays, I love to travel, try new foods and learn about different cultures. This summer, I am excited about going on a trip to Japan for 2 weeks.
I can't wait to meet you all and have an amazing year in First Grade!
