    2024 Virginia Summer Residential Governor’s School

    WHO: Only current sophomores and juniors may apply

    WHAT: Summer Residential Governor’s School (SRGS) is a highly selective, month-long, college-like, residential program for selected gifted and talented high school students. The areas of study are:

    2024 Academic Programs

    • Agriculture
    • Humanities
    • Mathematics, Science & Technology
    • Engineering (Jefferson Lab)
    • Marine Science (VA Institute of Marine Science)


    2024 Visual & Performing Arts Programs

    • Dance
    • Instrumental Music
    • Vocal Music
    • Theatre
    • Visual Arts


    WHEN: Programs usually begin at the end of June and conclude at the end of July. Individual program length may vary. If selected, you must commit for the entire duration of the program.

    WHERE: SRGS is held at various college and university campuses throughout the Commonwealth. Please refer to the Summer Residential Governor’s School website for location information and dates.

    COST: LCPS pays a portion of the cost (tuition, room/board). Parents/Guardians are responsible for transportation costs and the Activity Fee. The Activity Fee varies by Governor’s School. Students in need may apply for the Activity Fee Waiver form which is available on the Governor’s School website. Remaining costs are funded through the Virginia General Assembly, the Virginia Department of Education, the host university, and, occasionally, private foundations. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the SRGS host campus and are expected to have their spending money.


    ALL APPLICANTS: The application process will be different this year. Please monitor the VDOE Summer Residential Governor’s School website for more information. The website is now updated and you may begin your application.

    • Visual and Performing Arts applicants must also complete the following steps:

    o Register online for the Preliminary Audition by October 23, 2023.

    o Registration Form is found on the LCPS Gifted Education Website, Governor’s School webpage

    o LCPS preliminary auditions are on October 30, 2023 at Briar Woods High School.

    o Students will be notified of results on November 8, 2023.

    October 23, 2023 – Audition registration deadline for LCPS Preliminary VPA Auditions.

    October 30, 2023 – Preliminary Audtions

    November 8, 2023 – Students are notified of results

    December 4, 2023 – ALL APPLICATIONS (both Academic and VPA) are due to Ms. Ellis. 

    February 1 & 2, 2024 – Nominating committee meets to read and score every LCPS application. 

    February 9, 2024 – All LCPS applicants are notified of their nomination status by email.

    April 15, 2024 – VDOE emails all nominees their acceptance status (approximate date)
