2023 - 2024 Eligibility Info

  • Gifted Eligibility for Students in Grades 4 - 5

    Parent/Guardian Referral Window:

    September 5 - October 2, 2023

If you are interested in referring your child to be evaluated for gifted services this fall, please submit a signed referral form to Mrs. Cornell, the gifted resource teacher, before Monday, October 2, 2023. Parent/Guardian referral forms may be printed by clicking the blue link below.

Keep in mind that LCPS students may be evaluated for gifted services once annually, so 3rd or 4th grade students who participated in the spring 2023 evaluation cycle are not eligible for re-evaluation until spring 2024. Similarly, participants in the fall 2023 eligibility cycle will be eligible for consideration again in fall 2024. LCPS delivers weekly gifted services to students in grades 4-8 who, through a multi-tiered identification process, are found eligible for services.

The mission of the gifted identification process is to identify and provide services to advanced learners - the top performers at a grade level - who require enrichment/extension in order to be challenged intellectually and academically. Since giftedness is dynamic rather than static, the LCPS Gifted Education department provides universal screening in 3rd grade with annual re-evaluations offered through 8th grade (with a parent/guardian referral). Gifted services end after 8th grade since Honors, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and the Academies of Loudoun provide countless high-school opportunities for advanced learners.

The Three Primary Considerations for Gifted Eligibility

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test scores - Math and Reading

CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) scores - Verbal, Nonverbal, and Quantitative

Student Portfolios - a collection of student responses to a series of critical and creative thinking challenges

IMPORTANT NOTE: UNIVERSAL SCREENING FOR THIRD GRADERS

In the late winter/early spring of 2024, the LCPS Gifted Education department will conduct a universal screening of all third-grade students. The same factors listed above will be under review. No parent permission is necessary. However, if you prefer to opt your child out of the process, please email amy.cornell@lcps.org for an opt-out form. Notifications of eligibility will be communicated via email in late May 2024.
