Class Descriptions

  • Beginner Orchestra (non-auditioned)

    Elective This class is open to students who have an interest in learning to play violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Students provide their own instruments through rental or purchase. 5th grade students wishing to join the orchestra must attend an evening orchestra clinic in the spring. During this clinic, students will meet with the orchestra and be evaluated individually on each of the orchestra's instruments. This is to ensure they are matched up with an instrument that best suits their natural physical characteristics and best guarantees their success. Students are required to practice daily. Participation in performance activities, such as winter and spring concerts and rehearsals outside regular school hours is required. This class uses Essential Elements Book 1 (which is required to be purchased) and is a 45-minute homogenous class. Students will learn how to hold and care for the instrument, musical basics, and at least 3 out of 4 strings.

    Intermediate Orchestra (auditioned) 

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Beginner Orchestra or equivalent study and experience AND successful audition

    Elective students enrolled in this class will continue learning and developing the fundamental skills of playing an orchestra instrument with an increased emphasis on ensemble performance. Students provide their own instruments through rental or purchase. Instruments include: violin, viola, cello, double bass. Students are required to practice daily. Participation in performance activities, such as concerts, assessments and rehearsals outside regular school hours is required.This class uses both Essential Elements book 1 and 2 (which are required to be purchased) and is a 45-minute heterogeneous class. Students will learn intermediate musical skills such as reading sharps and flats, dynamics, terminology, rhythms while also learning all 4 strings

    Advanced Orchestra (Auditioned)

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of intermediate Orchestra or equivalent study and experience AND successful audition

    Elective Advanced Orchestra provides students the opportunity to continue to build their musical skills in preparation for performance at the high school level. There is a continued emphasis on development of performance techniques, sight-reading skills, ensemble playing, and a more difficult and varied repertoire. Students provide their own instruments through rental or purchase. Students are required to practice daily. Participation in performance activities, such as concerts, assessments and rehearsals outside regular school hours is required. Students will also be encouraged to participate in county-sponsored musical events such as junior regional orchestra, all county orchestra, and solo and ensemble. This class is a 90 minute heterogeneous period that uses Essential Elements book 2.
