Welcome to fifth grade!
Fifth grade is a fun and exciting year as students learn the skills needed to successfully transition to middle school next year.
This year, we will cover a wide variety of topics in math, reading, writing, and social studies/science, to help students prepare for the SOL tests in the upcoming spring. In math, we will be covering everything from algebra, decimal operations, fraction operations, and geometry to order of operations, measurement conversions, and area/perimeter. In reading, we will cover how to successfully write a persuasive, narrative, and informative piece of writing, using our Units of Study by Lucy Calkins. In science, we will evaluate the different parts of a cell, the layers of the earth, light and sound production, and much more! Finally, in social studies, we will be studying the 5 regions of the United States, and what makes each region unique.
In addition to our regular studies, fifth grade is also filled with many other fun and exciting activities such as FLE and DARE. Students will also, once again, have the opportunity to participate in our annual Geography Bee and Spelling Bee. Students will continue to have their regular specials, and will have many opportunities to engage in hands-on experiments, project-based learning, and collaborate in groups with their peers.
My goal as a teacher is to foster a level of independence and confidence within my students, while also providing them with opportunities to enjoy learning and make their learning experience their own!
We look forward to a great start to the upcoming school year, and I look forward to meeting many of you soon!
