IncreasingLCPS Positive Cases Trend
Week of
January 4 - January 8*Number of new positive cases among staff and students who participate
in-person at an LCPS school or worksite reported in the week indicated,
compared to the number from the prior week.Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Core Indicators
The two core indicators listed below include measures of underlying community burden. These measures are considered along with the school-based implementation of essential COVID-19 mitigation strategies.
The CDC chart linked below provides more information about the thresholds for the risk of introduction and transmission of COVID-19 in schools.
CDC Indicators for Dynamic Decision-Making
Core Indicator Risk Level Total number of new cases per 100,000 persons within the last 14 days in Loudoun County*
413.7
Percentage of RT-PCR tests that are positive during the last 14 days in Loudoun County**
16.8%
*Total number of new cases per 100,000 persons within the last 14 days is calculated by adding the number of new cases reported in the locality (city or county) in the last 14 days, dividing by the population of that locality, and multiplying by 100,000. This indicator differs from the daily case incidence rate per 100,000 used in the Daily Region Metrics dashboard because it captures the case incidence for 14 days rather than just one day.
** Percentage of RT-PCR tests in the locality that are positive during the last 14 days is calculated by dividing the number of positive tests over the last 14 days by the total number of tests conducted over the last 14 days and multiplying by 100. As referenced by the VDH CDC Schools Metrics website, this value reflects a data lag of 4 days (including current date), which allows for testing results to be reviewed to ensure a stable calculation of the percent positivity metric.

Loudoun County Public Schools is committed to providing current information to the community about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our schools.
The data below provides information about two categories of students and staff members who have reported testing positive for the virus that causes COVID-19:
- The number of active positive cases among staff members and students who participate in-person at an LCPS school or worksite, by school or work location;
- The cumulative number of positive cases reported among staff members and students who participate in-person at an LCPS school or worksite since Sept. 8, 2020, by school or work location; and
- The number of new cases among staff members and students who participate in-person at an LCPS school or worksite, by school or work location, reported within the last 24 hours. Data displayed on Mondays will reflect new cases reported on Fridays.
Active Positive Cases are those individuals who have reported testing positive and who are currently excluded from participation in any activity at an LCPS facility (including attending classes, athletic practices or reporting for on-site work, in the case of employees). This number will increase or decrease depending on their required period of isolation or when a student or staff member who has reported testing positive receives medical clearance to return to school-based activities or to work onsite.
Cumulative Positive Cases is the total number of students or staff members who have reported testing positive for the virus since Sept. 8. This number includes all current active cases as well as individuals who have completed their period of isolation or been medically cleared to return to school-based activities or work. This number may increase but it will not decrease.
New Cases is the number of cases newly reported on the previous work day by staff members and students who participate in-person at an LCPS school or worksite. Data displayed on Mondays will reflect new cases reported on Fridays. Any cases reported on a weekend will be reflected in the data displayed on Tuesdays.
We are only reporting active cases of students or staff who are onsite; this includes students who may only be on-campus for athletics or extra-curricular activities.
When a staff member or student reports testing positive to LCPS, announcements are sent to all staff members and parents/guardians of students at the affected school. All other LCPS staff members are also informed, and the announcements are made public through area news media.
Data reported is as of 5 p.m. on the previous work day, and will be updated by 11 a.m. each work day.
A list of cases announced by LCPS and the affected school or facility since March 2020 is reflected in this LCPS Pre-Sept. 8, 2020, COVID-19 Case Data report.
Data reported below is current as of 5 p.m. Jan. 14, 2021.

COVID-19 Outbreaks by Selected Exposure Settings
The Virginia Department of Health publishes a dashboard of outbreaks (outbreaks with at least two positive cases by a molecular test, like PCR) of COVID-19 in various exposure settings, including K-12 schools.
The dashboard is available on the VDH website at the following address:
Data on the dashboard is updated weekly, on Friday.
