English 10 Honors Quarter 1 Plan
Students are encouraged to purchase a copy of the class novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell. This is not mandatory; however, students benefit greatly from annotating and interacting with the text. A PDF will be uploaded on Schoology.
Quarter 1 Plan: Introduction of characterization, rhetoric, and theme analysis skills through poems, non-fiction articles, and novels. Writing: Introduction of AXES writing format for rhetorical analysis writing.
Topics: Annotations, big ideas and themes, propaganda, rhetoric, relationship between author's word choice and theme, conflict, characterization, assertions, commentary, evidence, MLA format citations, relationships between elements of literature.

Quarter 2 Plan: Continued application of literary analysis skills through in-class plays, poetry, and nonfiction articles providing historical context. Writing: Continued application of AXES paragraph for literary analysis.
Topics: Author's word choice, connotation vs denotation, distinguishing literary forms, cultural or social function of literary text, influence of historical context, assertions, selecting effective evidence, commentary.
