Library Policies
Checkout Policy
Students visit the library each week with their class. However, they are welcome to visit the library anytime during the school day, not just during their library class time.
- Kindergarten students may borrow one book at a time
- Students in grades 1-5 may borrow 4 books at a time
We do not charge fees for overdue books. We send home reminders of overdue books once a month.
Lost or Damaged Books
We can repair most damage to books, except for damaged caused by water, soda, slime, etc. Books that cannot be repaired must be paid for so that we can purchase a replacement. We accept checks made out to Sully Elementary or cash.
Lost books often turn up in the classroom or your home after a few weeks! If a book cannot be located after several weeks or at the end of the year, we will ask you to pay for it so we can purchase a replacement. If the book is found, but we have already purchased a replacement, we cannot give a refund.
Selection Policy
We choose to purchase books for our collection based on:
- Teacher requests
- Student requests
- Analysis of the collection and identified needs for instructional use or student interest
We read reviews and consult other librarians when choosing books for purchase.
Requests for Reconsideration
Objections to instructional materials shall be considered objectively under the procedure set forth in Loudoun County Public Schools' Regulations for the Selection and Review of Library Instructional Materials. The principle of intellectual freedom inherent in the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, the best interests of the students, school, and curriculum, and requirements of state law and regulations shall underlie all considerations of challenged materials. An online Reconsideration of Instructional Materials Request may be found here.
