    Happy Friday!!

I can't believe we are at the end of the month already!

Time is going by sooo fast.  I'm guessing the little bit of flurries we were able to run around in is all we're going to be able to see of snow this school year.  So SAD but boy did they really love it.  It was so funny to watch them trying to catch the snow flakes in their mouths.  It was funnier when they came up to ask me why I was having them come out in the "snow."  :)

On another note, I wanted to share a bit about the new behavior accountability sheets that you might have seen in your child's agenda this week.  I thought I would try this so that we can keep in touch about how everyone is doing.  There are four focus areas which coincide with our school behavior plan of ROAR.  I'm looking to see that the kids are being Respectful, On Task, Acting Safely, and being Responsible.  Most of the students will have four stars shaded because for the most part, they really show their ROAR.  If they are lacking in something, ie. HW, not focusing in class, not completing classwork work, not keeping their hands to themselves, etc, I will make a note on the sheet or let the child know.  If your child brings home their agenda with all fours starts on the ROAR, you DO NOT have to sign it.  You can praise them and tell them to keep up the great job!  If they have one or two stars shaded with a note from me, please discuss ways they can improve.  Ask them about it, they are pretty honest and will tell you exactly why they got what they got.  I'm hoping this will keep them accountable and help the next few months run a bit smoother.  Thank you as always for your support.  If you have any questions or you want to discuss this further, please feel free to email me.

A Peek at this Past Week!

Math: We continued with our Fraction Unit.  This week we learned how to use fractions on a number line.  We learned about mixed numbers and improper fractions. We learned how they were related to each other.

Science: We spent this week working on a culminating Science PBA. We took everything we learned on ecosystems and created an ecosystems with animal communities, habitats, food chains, predators, and prey.

Writing: We continued to work on our Power Points. We continued to work on the next three-four slides of our presentation.  I am hoping to complete these by the end of next week. Please look out for Power Point Presentation flyer in our Thursday Folder.

Reading: We continued our Lucy Calkins unit on Character Studies. We almost finished reading Because of Winn Dixie. We continued reading in our Book Clubs.  Students broken up into groups of 4-5 and they chose books that they wanted to read with their clubs.  They read 3-4 chapters each day and met to have “Book Talks”.  They really got into their Book Clubs.

    Looking Ahead to Next Week.

Math: We will continue with our Fraction Unit.  This week we will learn how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.  We will learn about equivalent fractions. We will hopefully learn to compare fractions with like denominators.

    Happy Friday!!

I hope you had a great week and are ready for the weekend.  It looks like we will have some nice weather for Saturday and Sunday.  Can’t wait!

As much as I adore each and every single one of my students, I would like to send a little reminder this time of the year.  I find students are starting to lose their motivation in academics and not showing their expected ROAR behaviors.  To encourage your children, I recommend having a conversation with them addressing these 3 questions.

    1. How are they being respectful to teachers and classmates? Is this something they can improve on?
    2. How are they staying on task and showing self-discipline in the classroom? Is this something they can improve on?
    3. How are they being responsible 3rd graders? Is there something they can improve on?

Thank you for all your support at home.  I wouldn’t be able to do this without your help!

Happy Friday! Feels like a long week after the winter break and our little snow day week.  It’s hard to believe we are half way through the year with the end of second quarter already here.  I will be busy this week with report cards and a 3 day volleyball tournament for my daughter.  Hope you guys do something fun for your 4-day weekend with the kids.

A Peek at this past Week!

    September

    Welcome September!!

It's always nice when you start the week on a Tuesday.  The days just go by so quickly!

Math:  We worked on telling time to the nearest minute as well as learning the terms quarter after, half past, and quarter til.  We also learned to figure out elapse time.  We were able to start our Math Workshop Rotations.  A bit of a rocky start since so many have never worked in centers.  Hopefully we will learn to get it right in the next few weeks.

Social Studies: We learned about our government and how we have local, state, and national governments.  We also learned about our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Writing: We started on our Superhero paragraph.  We learned how to make a topic sentence, come up with 3 details to support it, and to end it with a closing sentence.

Reading: In reading we learned to be like Goldilocks and pick the best books and to treat them like they were gold.  We are also working on keeping a log of our reading times to work on our reading stamina.

**We worked on some in class word study activities to help with our Word Study test and took our practice test today (Friday).

    Looking Ahead to Next Week.

Math: We will continue with our Calendar/Time/Temperature Unit.  We will learn to read a thermometer in Fahrenheit and Celsius.  We will review and test at the end of the week.  Study guides were handed out today.  We also have a copy on our web page under Study Guides.

Social Studies:  We will continue with our Government/Civics Unit by learning about how diversity makes our country and world better.  We will also learn about good citizenship skills and work on our PBL project focusing on kindness.

Writing:  We will edit and revise our Superhero paragraph.  We will type our good copies and illustrate it to publish.

Reading:  For our mini-lessons we will continue to work on building a reading life by learning to share books with partners.  We will also start on some reading comprehension by looking for textual clues.

    Upcoming Tests and Events:

    • Real Word Study will be sent home on Monday, Sept. 9th.
    • Math MAP test will be Thursday, Sept. 12th.
    • Calendars/Time/Temperature Test will be Friday, Sept. 13th.

I think this is all for today.

    Have a wonderful Weekend!

    Labor Day

We did it! We completed our first week of school!!

This week started with a great Monday, but as the days went by, you could see how tired the kids were getting.  I think were are all looking forward to the long weekend.  It's quite an adjustment returning to a week of school after 2 months of vacation.  Teachers included!

We had a lot of rules, routines, and expectations that we covered each day.  I hope the kids were able to share some of our classroom routines and expectations.

Thank you parents for all your help in getting our kids back into the swing of things.

After going through all the logistics of back to school, we were still able to cover some content.
