SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM
The School Counseling Department would like to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! As school counselors, we play an integral part in the education of all students by helping with academic needs, social/emotional learning, and career awareness. The school counseling curriculum provides us with the opportunity to work with students in large groups (classroom lessons), small groups (lunch groups), and individually. Our goal is to provide assistance with any concerns that may interfere with the educational and personal development of our students.
All grade levels will receive classroom lessons with their assigned school counselor every other week for 30 minutes. Class activities and discussions with students focus on character education, friendships, bullying prevention, conflict resolution, study skills, and career exploration.
We are also available to meet individually with students on a short-term basis to discuss any concerns that interfere with learning. Students may be referred to the counselor by a parent, teacher, or administrator. Students may also refer themselves. If you would like your child to be seen individually, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school counselor.
Small group lessons will be offered throughout the year for students to discuss specific concerns they have in common with other students. These groups are offered to students in grades K-5. Parent permission is needed to participate. Small groups consist of 3-8 students and will meet for approximately six sessions. Each weekly meeting will be held during lunch or other non-academic time. Selected small groups will begin in late October and March. Participants for lunch group sessions will be selected primarily through teacher referrals. If you feel that your child could benefit from a particular group, please contact your child’s counselor by phone or email.
Occasionally students request to have lunch with their friends in the counselor’s office. This is considered a “Fun Lunch” and is different from the planned lunch groups listed below. No parent permission is required for a Fun Lunch.
DESCRIPTION OF LUNCH GROUPS (Grades K - 5)
We will have multiple sessions of groups throughout the year starting in late October. Once groups are set up, a Legacy School Counseling Department permission form will be sent home.
- SOCIABLE KIDZ (Social Skills/Friendships) - The purpose of this group is to help students learn and apply appropriate social skills. We will also focus on how to make new friends and solve conflicts that may arise among peers. Activities include role plays, games, stories, and group discussion.
- UNIQUELY U (Self-Esteem) - This group is designed to help students improve their self-image. Participants will learn how to utilize positive self-talk, to initiate conversations with peers and adults, to cope with mistakes, and to recognize success. Activities include role plays, games, stories, and group discussion.
- STRESSBUSTERS (Stress Management/Anxiety) - The purpose of this group is to teach students that stress is a normal feeling experienced by everyone at times, and that there are ways to recognize symptoms of stress. Students will also develop individual strategies that may help manage these feelings of anxiety.
- STOP & THINK (Making Good Choices) – This group will focus on learning how our choices have consequences, why we should practice good choices, and understanding how choices affect ourselves and those around us.
Additionally, we are available for consultation with parents to discuss issues which may be impacting your child. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to getting to know you and your child this year at Legacy Elementary!
