• Ashley, me, Mr. Cerino, and Alexa

My name is Karen Cerino, and this will be my 2nd year teaching at Sugarland Elementary!  I taught 2nd and 5th grade in Fairfax County before making the switch into Loudoun County.

I went to James Madison University for my Bachelor of Science degree.  I then went on to get my Masters in Elementary Education from George Mason University.

I switched careers.  Before teaching, I spent four years as a Communications Officer with the United States Marine Corps and worked in the corporate world as a Project Manager.

My goal as a teacher is to instill confidence and develop independent thinkers who can advocate for themselves.  I start this process by creating a classroom environment where everyone is respected and feels safe.  This type of environment encourages students to take more risks with their learning.  I also set expectations high to show the students what they can achieve.  Once this classroom environment is established, I do my best to keep the room moving and I provide student-directed choices to support their learning styles.  This all leads to a higher level of student engagement.  I act like a coach who facilitates and motivates.  Ultimately, my job is to prepare students for middle school and beyond.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two daughters. Ashley is a senior and Alexa is a freshman and they both attend Dominion High School!  I can often be found on the Dominion sidelines supporting both of my girls with cross country and track.  In addition, Ashley plays soccer and Alexa plays lacrosse.  I also attend most of the Dominion football games.  When I am not at Dominion HS, I love visiting Seneca Lake in New York, traveling to the beach, reading, and football season (Go Washington!).  Finally, I am a huge animal lover. I have two rescue cats, Tuesday and Lily.  I hope to take in more pets this year.

I am thrilled to be your teacher and look forward to getting to know you and your family!  I can be reached by phone: 571-434-4460 or email: karen.cerino@lcps.org.  Please do not hesitate to reach out!  Mrs. Cerino (Ser-ee-no)
