Welcome to Starting Towards Excellence in Preschool
at Frederick Douglas Elementary School!
Starting Towards Excellence in Pre-School (STEP) is a state (Virginia Preschool Initiative Grant - VPI) and locally funded program that serves children who are four years old by September 30.
The curriculum is aligned with Virginia's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning and focuses on early literacy and early math instruction, as well as developmentally appropriate social and behavioral expectations. The goal is to close the achievement gap that might exist between the STEP students, who may be referred to as at-risk, and enable them to perform on a level consistent with their more advantaged peers.
STEP has a three-hour program with a.m. and p.m. sessions. The maximum class size is 16 students per session.
Your family may qualify for the STEP Program if you:
reside in Loudoun County (in a geographical area served by STEP)
have a child who will be 4 years old by September 30th
meet income guidelines, which is based on 200% poverty level.
have a child with a diagnosed disability or an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)
