Mrs. Butler

Welcome Discovery Trail Blazers! My name is Sigrid Butler and I want to welcome you and your student to the Fabulous Fifth Grade. This is my fourth year with Discovery Elementary and I am very excited to spend a fun-filled year of learning with your child!

I started at Discovery Elementary as a student teacher, became a substitute, and ended up as a teaching assistant.  Now as a teacher, I am honored to help continue the tradition of excellence Discovery has to offer.  My philosophy is to create a classroom culture of kindness and respect where your children feel loved and love to learn.  In addition, they will learn to work with others, become good communicators (both listening and speaking), and experience critical thinking.  It will be a great year!

My background includes a degree from Old Dominion University where I studied Special Education and autism spectrum disorder. I have four children and stayed home with them as they grew and advanced through LCPS. Then, as my children started leaving for college, marriage, and military careers, I decided to fulfill my dream of becoming an elementary educator.  I felt a deep connection with the extraordinary student population and focused my energy in earning a master’s degree in Special Education.  It has been a great life change and I have loved working here at Discovery.  I currently live in Ashburn with my husband and my sweet dog named Chance!  I have two sons who graduated from Virginia Tech and are now serving as military officers in the Army.  I have a daughter who graduated from UVA Wise and is a kindergarten teacher in Charleston, South Carolina. Finally, I have a son who enlisted in the Army, served his country, and is now in Pennsylvania attending United Technology Institute to become an auto mechanic. It is my hope to pass on my love of education to your students, so they too will become lifelong learners!
