Degrees and Certifications:
Bachelor's of Music in Music Therapy Professional Teaching License
My name is Mrs. Shipman and I am excited to begin the 2020-2021 school year! This will be my 19th year working with children with diverse learning needs, my 10th year in Loudoun County Public Schools, and my 5th year teaching here at Discovery Elementary.
I grew up in Rutland, Massachusetts - the exact center of the state - there was a tree in our neighbor's yard, with a fence around it and a plaque, marking it the exact geographical center of the state. So when I say I'm from Central Mass, I really am! I attended Immaculata University and graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy. In my career, I have woked as a Music Therapist, an ABA Therapist, and a Special Education Teacher. I moved to Virginia in 2006, and began working for Fairfax County Public Schools. In 2011, my family and I moved to Loudoun County and I began teaching for LCPS at Horizon Elementary, in Sterling. I moved to Discovery in 2016, and have been a co-teacher ever since.
My family and I moved to Middleburg last year to live the "country" life. We bought a "fixer upper" Cape Cod style home, much like the house I grew up in and ironically, they were both built in the same year. My daughter, Katie, is currently a fourth grader here at Discovery as well. She is an avid butterfly catch-and-releaser. I also have an 18 year old stepson, Joseph, who just started his freshman year of college and is starting Navy ROTC soon as well. We have a torn military household now - Joseph will be Navy and my brother is a Marine. My father, who also lives with us, says we'll just have to fly both flags! My husband and I enjoy home renovations and yard work on the weekends, all while being followed around by our dog, Hobbes, a Redbone-Lab-Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix.
I'm looking forward to a great school year!
