Dr. Benjamin Kagan, Science
Dr. Benjamin Kagan signs on to Independence as a biology teacher! Growing up in the suburbs of NYC, Dr. Kagan earned his B.S. in Biology from Binghamton University, in 1997. After conducting research on how proteins affect cancer gene expression, he received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 2002 from Georgetown University, in Washington, DC. Dr. Kagan then worked as a post-doctoral researcher for the next 7 years at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD and at Georgetown University. In 2010, Dr. Kagan received his M.Ed. with an endorsement in Secondary Biology from Marymount University in Arlington, VA, while being nominated as a 2010 Milken Foundation Virginia Teacher of Promise. In the fall of 2010, he opened Tuscarora High School, in Leesburg, VA, as a charter member of the science department, spending 9 years teaching all levels of biology (Honors, Academic, and AP/DE) and Independent Science Research, while co-sponsoring the THS Academic Team, Science National Honor Society, and Walking for Water. For 2019-2020, Dr. Kagan joins the science department at IHS as a charter staff member again as well as the sponsor for Key Club and Walking for Water, and hopes to bring his passion for biology and research to a whole new community of students. Dr. Kagan enjoys spending time with his wife and son Ethan in his spare time. Let's go Tigers!!
