    Parents,

    I want to thank you all very much for all the cards, letters, pictures, books, classroom supplies, and gifts this week.  I have felt very appreciated and I am touched by your kindness. 

    Math- We are learning how to tell time.  The students need to know how to tell time to the hour, half hour, quarter after, and quarter to.  We are using both analog and digital clocks. Keep practicing math facts using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  

    Reading- During the Reading Workshop we are reading fiction and books in a series. This is always a a fun unit for the kids!  We are reading series books and focusing on the main characters.  The students are increasing their reading stamina up to 30 minutes.  Please read daily with your child.

    Writing-We are focusing on writing a complete paragraph.  The students are expected to write a topic sentence, details, and a conclusion sentence.  They are writing persuasive/opinion paragraphs.

    Content- We are studying economics.  The concepts include goods and services, producers and consumers, natural-capital-human resources, scarcity, and bartering.

    Word Study -  The last list came home this week.  The test is on May 17.

    June 4 - Field Day 

    June 5 - RAIN Date for Field Day

    June 6 - End of the year class party 12-1:30pm.  Mrs. Nosner will be in touch about the party details.

    Parents,

    Math- We are studying fractions. The students need to know that a unit fraction is 1.  They need to know 1/2, 1/3, 1/4,  1/6, 1/8 using models. We are using hands on manipulatives to have a better conceptual understanding of them.  Keep practicing math facts using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  

    Reading- During the Reading Workshop we are reading fiction and books in a series. This is always a a fun unit for the kids!  We are reading series books and focusing on the main characters.  The students are increasing their reading stamina up to 30 minutes.  Please read daily with your child.

    Reading- During the Reading Workshop we are switching back to fiction and books in a series. This is always a a fun unit for the kids!  The students are increasing their reading stamina up to 30 minutes.  Please read daily with your child.

    Writing-We are focusing on writing a complete paragraph.  The students are expected to write a topic sentence, details, and a conclusion sentence.  

    Content- We are studying erosion, weathering, and fossils and their effects.  We will make a fossil to take home.

    Word Study - A NEW list will come home on April 22 and the test will be on May 3.

    Thank you to everyone who was able to come to our last Epic Build this year.

    Reading- During the Reading Workshop we are focusing on reading nonfiction books.  We are practicing reading to learn something new in nonfiction texts.  We are learning to identify the main idea and supporting details.  The students are increasing their reading stamina up to 30 minutes.  Please read daily with your child.

    2nd Grade Family Art Night

    Wednesday, March 13

    6:00 - 7:30

    Second Grade Family Art Night is designed to be a

    fun-filled night of exploring, experimenting and creating art.

    It is an opportunity to get away from the TV and to spend

    time together as a family. Each family will travel through

    art stations and create an art project together, as a family.

    Family members will not travel separately through stations

    but will be asked to stay together to complete an art project.

    The goal of the night is to create art together as a family,

    show off artistic talents and have some fun.

    March 15 - Word Study assessment

    March 29 - No School - Teacher Workday

    Parents,

    Math-Our unit on graphing will begin next week.  The focus is on creating different types of graphs (bar and picto) and analyzing the data.  Keep practicing math facts using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  I sent home a fact fluency report for each student today.  Please take a minute and talk with your child about his/her progress.

    Reading- During the Reading Workshop we are focusing on reading fiction books.  We are studying story elements-characters, setting, problem, and solution in order to retell  story.  The students are increasing their reading stamina up to 30 minutes.  Please read daily with your child.

    Writing-We are writing personal narratives during the Writing Workshop.  We are following the steps of the writing process.  Focusing on a strong lead, transition words, mechanics, and staying on topic.

    Content- We are studying matter in science.  We will conduct experiments to see the different states of matter.  

    The second graders did an amazing job performing in their music show today! Thank you for coming out and supporting our students.

    Important dates:

    February 13, 14, 15-COGAT TESTING FOR ALL SECOND GRADERS.  Please have your child get a good night's rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and be at school on time.  

    February 14 - Valentine Exchange-This is NOT a party. Per LCPS Policy, no candy.  Please have your child bring in their decorated box and valentines to pass out.

    February 18 - No School - President's Day

    February 22- Word Study test

    February 22- BINGO Night in the gym

    Math-We are learning double digit addition and subtraction.  This involves understanding the concept of borrowing and regrouping. Keep practicing math facts using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  

    Reading-  During the Reading Workshop we are focusing on reading fiction books.  We are studying story elements-characters, setting, problem, and solution in order to retell  story.  The students are increasing their reading stamina up to 30 minutes.  Please read daily with your child.
