Code To The Future
On Monday, students will begin learning the computer science program called Scratch. The goal of lesson one is for students to be aware of what they can do in the Scratch program and understand the basic elements of a video game.
MATH: This week we explored place value concepts of whole numbers and decimals. Students reviewed the difference between digit, value and place. At the end of the week, students worked on adding and subtracting decimals.
PLEASE continue to review multiplication facts through 12’s. A solid foundation in math facts will make a big difference as the year progresses.
Check Google Classroom for current assignments
Science: Next week we will begin to discuss the Scientific Method. We will break down each of the six steps.
Ask a Question
Form a Hypothesis
Plan and conduct Experiment
Collect and Analyze Data
There is a current assignment in Google Classroom. This SOL Pass assignment is both a review and a preview of our first unit.
WRITING: I loved reading the students letters to me, filling me in on something special about their lives. This week we focused on the mechanics of writing. The students identified parts of speech and we went over thestructure of sentences and paragraphs. We will continue to strengthen our foundations in writing to prepare for our first writing unit in a few weeks.
READING: The students are continuing to “Build their Reading Life”. They have worked to develop their love of reading by choosing high interest books, finding happy reading spots, and showing their thinking as they read. We have begun to talk about strategies to determine meaning of unknown words. We will continue using context clues in reading next week. Keep up your reading at home!
PBL: Plan a Field Trip
Today we kicked off our very first project Based Learning Project. On Monday, students will dive into the fifth grade curriculum and begin exploring various field trip options for this school year. Teams will be expected to choose a location, estimate transportation and admission cost in addition to planning a proposal to present to administration and the PTA. This is sure to be a very exciting time!

Reading and Writing Workshops are Off and Running
WOW! What an amazing first full week of school. We are so impressed with the responsible and kind group of students we met this past week. It was a very smooth transition into the fifth grade routine for all students. It is going to be a great year and we are excited to see what everyone will achieve this year.
Each week you will receive an update from your teachers filling you in on all the happenings of the week. We will also use the Remind App to send out reminders of upcoming events. Thank you to all of you have already signed up. Finally, don't forget to check out our class Twitter pages for pictures of fun things happening in our classes. We love sharing the amazing things your kids are accomplishing each day!
In Writing this week the students wrote a letter to their teachers telling us something they wish we knew about them. Next week we will focus on the mechanics of writing - parts of speech, sentence and paragraph structure, and punctuation - so that we are able to edit our stories and essays throughout the year. The students also took a spelling inventory to see what they need to work on in spelling. Be ready for a Spelling Contract to come home next week. They will have 2 weeks to complete their contract. The first word study assessment will be on Thursday, 9/14.
We were so excited to start our Reading Workshop this week. We are "Building Our Reading Life" by choosing just right books, increasing our stamina, and setting goals. We will continue to establish our reading routine and strengthen our habits next week. Please make sure your child is reading at home. They will record their reading in their logs at school, but should be setting up their own reading routine at home. Ask them about their "Happy Reading Place" at home. Some of them have come up with creative places to read!
