Mrs. Jana Drumm

My name is Jana Drumm and this year finishes my 32nd year teaching music! I have been at Tolbert for 9 of those years and am excited to begin my 10th in the fall!

I grew up in a small town in the Shenandoah Valley where music opportunities were not easily available.  I was determined to become a music teacher so that all children could learn to not only love music, but to find the musician that is in them.  I believe that children should be exposed to all styles of music beginning thousands of years ago to the present, from all countries and cultures.  Music effects us everyday of our lives and should be experienced in as many ways possible. Through movement, drama, speech, play, singing, and performing our children learn to relate to others in ways that other areas of study cannot. They learn a lot about themselves as well!  There IS a musician inside all of us! Have you found yours?

I received my Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Longwood College and then went on to earn my Masters in Music Education from George Mason University.  I am also certified in Orff Schulwerk, Kodaly, and World Music Drumming.  I have received two nominations for Teacher of the year through NAMM, National Association of Music Merchants, and made it to the quarter finals!  I am also looking for new ways to improve my teaching and find new material through going to conferences and workshops throughout the year.

I am an active member of Sterling Playmakers, having performed in many plays and musicals, and am looking forward to my next opportunity to be on stage.  I also love to read, spend time at the beach, bike, and go for hikes in the mountains!  My favorite thing to do though, is spend time with my husband and 6 kids (yes, I said 6.)
