 Welcome to Mrs. Bigney’s 5th grade!!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to a new school year and an exciting one at that!  I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and let you know a little more about our class.

I am thrilled to be coming back to Sycolin Creek Elementary! I have spent the past 19 years teaching 4th or 5th grade in many different places with most of my years spent in fifth grade. This will be my seventh year teaching at SCES. I have also taught at Sully Elementary school in Sterling. In other states and counties, I taught in Bethesda, MD; Randallstown, MD; Richmond, VA; and Dale City, VA. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Penn State University in 2002. I love the close-knit community of this school and I am greatly looking forward to working with new and old families here at Sycolin Creek. Go Salamanders!

Fifth grade is a very exciting time for your child, filled with important transitions and new skills to learn. Your child’s day will be filled with interactive learning opportunities while reading and writing, and investigating math and science concepts. Each week, students will participate in PE, music, art, library, and C-Lab sessions.  

I have high expectations for all of my students and know that with your support we will have a wonderful year of learning and growing together. I stress to the students that I am just a small part of the equation of learning. You, your child and I are one team and we are united with one common theme- To give your child everything he/she needs to be successful and feel successful. One of the most important goals I have for our year is to establish a safe and caring classroom environment where all students can feel comfortable to take risks, ask questions and feel positively about their time in room 27.  

I look forward to meeting you and getting to know your child. Open House will be Tuesday, August 23 from 10:00- 11:00am.  Back To School Night is scheduled for Tuesday, August 23 from 7:00- 8:15pm.
