Then
Odyssey of the Mind
is for you!
What is Odyssey of the Mind?
Odyssey of the Mind, often called OM or OotM, is a creative problem-solving competition involving students from kindergarten through collage. Students work in teams of as many as 7 members per team. Each year, five new competitive problems are presented for the teams to solve. These long-term problems are solved over months, typically September through February. The long-term problem is an 8-minute "performance" that the team works on. Some of the problems are more technical in nature, while others are artistic or performance based. Teams apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building vehicles and mechanical devices to presenting their own versions of literary classics. At the competition site, a spontaneous problem is given to the team on the day of the competition, where the team has a specific amount of time to creatively find solution/s for the question. The combination of long-term and spontaneous problem-solving is what makes students confident and thrive.
They present their solutions at competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
Cardinal Ridge Elementary qualifies for 2 divisions:
Primary Division: K, 1st, 2nd grades
Division 1: 3rd, 4th, 5th grades
Why Odyssey of the Mind is an excellent program?
Odyssey of the Mind teaches students creative problem solving methods while having fun. In Odyssey of the mind:
- Students identify challenges and think divergently to provide solutions for open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests.
- Students learn to work in groups enhancing their team-building skills.
- The creative thinking process is nurtured and developed as a problem solving tool.
- Since the fear of criticism is eliminated, it’s a great platform for shy students where they are afforded the opportunity to open up and express themselves.
In school year 20016-17, Cardinal Ridge teams participated across various problems and gave exemplary performances. We hope to do the same for the year 2017-2018.
