• The Green Government Challenge is a friendly competition organized by The Virginia Municipal League through its Go Green Virginia Initiative to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce the carbon emissions generated by both the local government and the broader community.  Many of these actions are not only environmentally friendly, but can save local governments money as well.  Cities, towns and counties can become a certified "Green Government."

Loudoun County's 2008 entry was prepared by the Loudoun County Government and Loudoun County Public Schools Energy Efficiency Task Force created by County Administrator Kirby Bowers.  The challenge was a comprehensive analysis of government best practices, products and policies regarding all things green, including energy, air quality, transportation, water quality, land use, purchasing and recycling.

Loudoun County won a first place award in the inaugural Virginia Municipal League's Green Government Challenge. The county tied with the City of Roanoke for the first place award for governments with a population of more than 90,000.  Winners and certified governments were recognized for a wide range of efforts to reduce energy consumption, improve energy efficiency and raise awareness about energy conservation.
