Ron YeagerProfessional BiographyMr. Ronald J.Yeager has been teaching Social Sciences in Loudoun County for the last 16 years. He came to Loudoun County from Cleveland City Schools in Cleveland, Ohio. While there he taught the Social Sciences in the "Twilight Program." He has one Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies from the Clarion University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Students examine the basic structure of government, its framework, political systems, and citizen participation on the local, state, national, and international levels. Students also explore the decision-making process as related to the basic structure of government that support the values inherent to our democratic society. Students gain a better understanding of how we govern ourselves as a people and of how laws are made, enforced, and judged. Students pay particular emphasis to their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Class activities help students to see the importance of voting in a democratic society, to recognize how laws affect the average citizen, to comprehend the role of the courts and the justice system, and to recognize the important role of the citizen in the life of the community. Students gain the essential understandings implicit in the phrase “of the people, by the people and for the people.”
World History / Geography I (Ancient, to 1500)
This course offers students the exciting drama of ancient history. From the Stone Age, through the Iron and Bronze ages, students see mankind move from nomadic wanderers to organized societies. The “river civilizations” are examined as the cradles of early civilization. Then the course paints the tapestry of the great early cultures. Students study Ancient Egypt, China, and Kush. They learn of Babylon and Greece. They relive the era of Rome and the beauty of the Byzantine Empire. The course describes the history, culture, and beliefs of many peoples. It now includes the Feudal Period, The Renaissance, and The Reformation. The course ends with The Great Convergence. Students see the great sweep of history and how one civilization built upon previous ones. They also study the impact of geography in shaping the events and cultures of humankind. An emphasis is placed on mastering the skills and content as outlined by the Virginia Standards of Learning. Care is taken to help students prepare for the end-of-course SOL test.Psychology
Providing a broad, general introduction to psychology, this course emphasizes how the basic subject matter of psychology has been attained by scientific methods. The course examines patterns and variations of human behavior and the process of human development. It helps the student see how psychological knowledge is applied to improve the quality of life.
Students examine society as the interaction of groups, how groups function, and the influence groups have on each other. Through a study of human relations, students are helped to develop a better understanding of those groups to which we belong. Through data collection and use of that data to test hypotheses and to explore sociological alternatives, both oral and written communication skills are developed and strengthened.
