FLYER.pubBRHS Weekly Info - December 6, 2014
Dear BRHS Community,You are cordially invited to attend our annual "Paying for College/Financial Aid Night" at Broad Run HS on December 8 at 7:00PM in the auditorium. Mr. Jack Zegeer, the Director of Financial Aid and Ms. Cathy Hall, High School Outreach Coordinator, both from Northern Virginia Community College will be presenting an overview of the college financial aid process.
Topics discussed:- What is financial aid?
- What is financial need?
- What is the cost of attendance (COA)?
- What is the expected family contribution (EFC)?
- Categories, types, and sources of financial aid?
- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)?
- There also will be a general Q & A period to answer other pending questions
We hope you can come out and participate in this informative presentation.
If you have any questions please feel free to call the School Counseling Office at 571-252-2314.
Please note the change in the PTSO sponsored practice SAT...December 14, attached flyer. This year, Broad Run High School is implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to help promote a positive school culture and learning environment. Key components of PBIS include educating students, parents, and staff on appropriate behaviors and reinforcing these expectations through acknowledgement and recognition. As faculty, we strongly believe in the importance of students showing cooperation, responsibility and empathy for others, so our behavioral expectations are outlined in the “Spartans CARE” acronym.
Throughout the year, I will communicate key pieces of information that we are reviewing with students in regards to appropriate behaviors. Our hope is that you will use this information as talking points with your students and help set a tone that is both consistent and supportive. Last year, attendance-related incidents represented our greatest number of discipline infractions which resulted in an incredible amount of lost instructional time. We are currently focusing on attendance and the importance of getting to class on time. As we continue the school year, please emphasize with your students the importance of punctuality.
File attachments:
As we begin the school year, I also need your help consistently enforcing our school dress code. School board policy 8-33 states that, “Clothing should fit, be neat and clean, and conform to standards of safety, good taste, and decency.”
Lastly, please take a few minutes to discuss with your student the appropriate use of social media. We often discover that students have a false sense of security while interacting on social media and post things that they would never say in person.
I thank you in advance for your support and help in addressing these concerns and I look forward to a great rest of the school year.
Any parents interested in participating in our school improvement committees are welcome. The include, teacher leadership, new teacher, PBIS, Social, Literacy, Freshman Transition, and Spartan Seminar.

Good Afternoon Students, Parents, and Teachers,
Sending the weekly message a little early so as to also remind everyone about the college fair at Rock Ridge High School this afternoon. Starts at 4:00 p.m. See the LCPS web site (calendar) for more info)
What a great week. I got to see our students recognized at the school board, our athletic teams continue to meet success, and the band looked great yesterday! Most significant, I continue to be impressed with our faculty and staff, and their dedication to our students.Lots if info in this week’s email.
Parents, we are not set up to take/accept deliveries for lunch from vendors for your students. If they forget money, or their packed lunch we will certainly help get it to them. Thanks in advance for your understanding.
Also, we will be mailing CLARITY access letters to those parents who have requested them this week. On October 1, parents can log in and see interim grades. Students will all get logins on October 1 in Spartan Seminar as well, so they can monitor their grades. Any student with a below average grade will have their parents contacted by the teacher this week. If parents who have not requested a CLARITY login would like one, they can access how to do this on our web site (CLARITY link), or call the school counseling office at 571-252-2314.
There will be an interest meeting this Wednesday, October 1st in the career center for any student who wants to learn more about Governor’s School. Students can bring their lunch to the career center and get all the information. If there are any questions they can direct them towards Ms. Murphy in the school counseling office.
School pictures are October 2 and 3. Information came home through English classes, and pictures will be taken through those classes. Please let me know if you have questions.
Seniors and parents of seniors. On October 15, during the PSAT for underclass students, seniors will have several activities. This includes a senior breakfast, panoramic picture, and an option to volunteer, movie, or study. We will meet this week with the senior class to further discuss.
