Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Paula Culvyhouse
Hi Red Wings! My name is Paula Culvyhouse and I am starting my fifth year at Cardinal Ridge. My career has been an exciting journey that began with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication from George Mason University and included advertising sales and desktop publishing. Life took an awesome turn in 2009 when I rediscovered my passion for education and became a substitute teacher. I enjoyed working with English Learners (EL) so much that I decided to become a full-time teacher.
Part of my life's work includes coaching athletes in Special Olympics www.sovaloudoun.org which began in 2007. Our softball team, the Cardinals, has competed in state and national tournaments. We won back to back gold medals at the state tournament in 2017 and 2018. I love listening to the athletes share their stories about the importance of perseverance and inclusion. When I am not volunteering, I enjoy swimming, bicycling, taking outdoor exercise classes, playing pickleball, hiking on Skyline Drive, going to the beach, and improv comedy classes. My next dream adventure is to try zip lining. I would like to accomplish this by the summer of 2021.
Each child’s academic, emotional, social and physical development is important. My goal is to ensure each student feels empowered to pursue their academic passions inside the classroom and out. I want each scholar to have the maximum ability to confidently express his or her ideas to peers, teachers and the world. Meeting these goals starts by helping English learners become proficient in the four domains of English: listening, reading, speaking and writing. The annual WIDA assessment is rigorous and requires students to use academic and technical language. Parents play an important part in the English acquisition process. In order to pass the WIDA test, some students practice reading with a program at home and school called Imagine Learning and complete written homework assignments. I encourage students who use Imagine Learning to continue practicing throughout the summer, during all school breaks, and when schools are closed due to inclement weather.
I love being a Red Wing and working with families to help their child make outstanding progress. My twitter handle is @Pculvyhouse. Please contact me with any questions or information about your child’s progress at email@example.com. Communication and collaboration are vital to helping our scholar's SOAR. I look forward to building our InCREdible Cardinal Ridge community together!
