Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Paula Culvyhouse
This is an exciting time to be a Red Wing! I am starting my third year at Cardinal Ridge and am so proud to be part of the community! I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Communication from George Mason University and worked in advertising sales and desktop publishing. In 2009, I rediscovered my passion for education and became a substitute teacher. I enjoyed working with English Learners (EL) so much that I decided to become a full-time teacher.
My other two passions are physical fitness and empowerment. I have honed these practices as a softball coach with Special Olympics since 2007. Our team, the Cardinals, has competed in state and national tournaments. We won back to back gold medals at the state tournament in 2017 and 2018. Working with athletes of all abilities has helped me become a better teacher in the classroom. When I am not volunteering, I enjoy spending time with friends, walking, traveling, playing Scrabble and hiking on Skyline Drive.
My goal is to help each student become proficient in the four domains of English: listening, reading, speaking and writing. The annual WIDA assessment is rigorous and requires students to use academic and technical language. After students have met the proficiency level for all four domains, they are ready to exit the EL program.
I am committed to working with parents throughout the academic year to help students be successful. There are many ways that families can support students. First, students need to have a high attendance record so that they can make continual progress. Second, students who are beginning to learn English, may be eligible for Imagine Learning https://www.imaginelearning.com/. Students may use the program at school and home even during summer vacation. Third, I recommend families read books in multiple languages with their children for entertainment. Approaching reading as entertainment results in higher academic achievement. The Loudoun County Library even has audio books for the car and books available as an app https://lcpl.overdrive.com/library/kids.
I look forward to working with your child. Please contact me with any questions and to share information about your child’s progress throughout the year. My email address is email@example.com. For more information about the EL program, go to https://www.lcps.org/page/354.
