    Good afternoon, Panther Community!

As you have no doubt learned from LCPS, hybrid students will automatically shift from attending school in person two days a week to four days a week starting April 20. Students who signed up for 100% distance will continue their current schedule. If your student is currently hybrid - attending in person 2 days a week - and wishes to change to 100% distance, you should contact their counselor.

    School Counselors
    Sarah D. Coleman:  A - CD
    Richard Bader:  CE -GN
    Lily.Carlyle:  L - N
    Lauren Gibson:  SB - Z

If your student is currently signed up for 100% distance learning and would like to shift to hybrid, attending school in person four (4) days a week starting April 20, then you should fill out this form request between April 5 and April 9. Submitting this request does not guarantee a change, as all requests will require an individual review of each course and capacity availability. After April 9, all submissions will be reviewed in the order received. A staff member from PFH will contact you regarding your request to return to hybrid instruction.

    Message from the PTSO

    Hey Panther Family!
Welcome to SPRING! We hope you all have a wonderful spring break!
Please take a moment to read this important update from the nominating committee. We hope that a few people will consider joining this team next year! It is a great way to keep communication open with our admin team and teachers. It is a privilege to be the touch point for various events and even contributors like the Mittal family, to provide donations and scholarships that might otherwise not have a place to be funneled through.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Graciela Olivares (Chair), Tara Nelson, and Jen Wike

One of the most important roles we play as a PTSO, is to include the Panthers Helping Panthers and Raven Relief Funds in our budget. It is a privilege to stand in the gap for our students in need. Please consider how you might be able to play a role in keeping this PTSO viable in the coming year!
We are looking for 2 people who are willing to shadow the president and treasurer for next year. This role is especially easy when you have a co-president as we have had for the past 2 years. Please consider playing a role on this team!!!
If you have questions or need more information, please contact Graciela at: g.lucio@att.net.

A note from the Attendance office…

Please review the following information regarding absences, tardies, and early dismissals. Even in the virtual learning environment, the attendance office needs to know these instances for accurate attendance.

    *Hybrid Students:
Any students who are signed up for hybrid MUST attend school in person on their assigned days, or they will be counted as absent, even if they attend virtually. The only exception is for students who are sick and have contacted the attendance office for special, temporary, permission. If a student is registered for hybrid but wishes to switch to distance learning, please contact their guidance counselor.

*Tardies: If a student is going to be late to school/virtual learning due to an appointment at the doctors, orthodontist, dentist, court, or any other reason, please notify us via Parent VUE, Permission Click, or email. Please make sure to submit or email Tanja.Brandt@lcps.org a copy of medical/dental notes or any other documentation from appointments, etc.

*Please note: Students are required to log in to Advisory, daily. If they do not attend Advisory...they are considered tardy to school and will be marked as such. Students are also required to check in with their Study Hall/Core class for attendance. They will be marked absent in any classes they do not attend/log in to and participate in.

*Absences: If a student is going to be absent from school for the day or longer, please notify the attendance office via Parent VUE, Permission Click, email, or by calling the absentee line at 571-434-3202. The absentee line is for absences only. Please submit or email Tanja.Brandt@lcps.org with medical/dental notes or any other documentation.

*Early Dismissals: Due to COVID mitigation strategies and for the safety of all, you CANNOT come into the school building to sign out your student for early dismissals. You can however request an early dismissal via Parent VUE, Permission Click, or by sending Tanja.Brandt@lcps.org an email. Make sure when you submit a request, that you enter the time that student needs to dismiss. If your student is in hybrid and in the building on a particular day they need to dismiss...please be sure to submit an early dismissal request at least 30 minutes in advance. The cutoff time for early dismissal requests is 3:30pm for in-person learning students (when they are in-person).

Our Attendance page, will provide you with Parent VUE instructions for submitting absences, tardies, and early dismissals...and has the Permission Click links for submissions as an alternative to using Parent VUE.

    Thank You! 😊

    Message from the PTSO

    Panther Family:

This week we want to acknowledge the weight of the loss of Adam Oakes to our Panther community. His life left a positive impact on all those who had the privilege to know him.  We are so thankful to be part of a community of teachers, students, parents, churches and even local businesses that have taken tangible steps to remember the impact of Adam's life. Our hearts go out to his family and friends, especially those who shared the distinction of being a part of his graduating class of 2020.

It has been said most sincerely and emphatically by all those who knew him that Adam lived out what he believed by being KIND to EVERYONE and taking time to LISTEN to them.  Our executive board knows there have been other seasons of great loss in our Panther Community and our intention from day one, has been to counteract dark with light and negative with positive. Today we are grateful for the life of Adam Oakes. He exemplifies the unconditional love that he clearly received from his parents and loving family and friends. We will close this year with every intention to finish well... just as he did. We will choose to Live Like Adam.

Remaining funds from his GoFundMe: help-adams-family-with-postmortal-costs will be used for PFHS Senior Scholarships in his name. Going forward, they will take initiative to educate and prepare graduates for college life and the entry to fraternity/sorority life in a safe and well-informed manner.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Graciela Olivares (Chair), Tara Nelson, and Jen Wike
In order for the PFHS PTSO to continue next year, there is a need for 2 more people to consider the position of president or secretary. We are thankful to those who are already willing to step in to the other positions.
One of the most important roles we play as a PTSO, is to include the Panthers Helping Panthers and Raven Relief Funds in our budget. It is a privilege to stand in the gap for our students in need. Please consider how you might be able to play a role in keeping this PTSO viable in the coming year!

A note from the Attendance office…

Please review the following information regarding absences, tardies, and early dismissals. Even in the virtual learning environment, the attendance office needs to know these instances for accurate attendance.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact Graciela at: g.lucio@att.net.

    Principal's Note

I want to welcome those of you back who returned in person for hybrid instruction this past week. It was refreshing seeing students back in the building! If you have any questions about how we are returning for in-person instruction, you can view these slides. We will keep them updated with any changes. If you have additional questions, you can pose them here

    Please remember the following:

    1. Report to your 1st or 5th block class every day. You will participate in advisory virtually from there. You will not be reporting to your advisory classroom. The time for advisory (9:15 – 9:35 Tuesday – Friday) remains the same.
    2. Fill out the symptom checker available on our website if you don’t receive it in your email every day before entering the building.
    3. Wear a mask at all times and bring a back up just in case.
    4. Make sure to stay 6 feet apart from others at all times.
    5. Bring your laptop/Chromebook, a charger and a set of earbuds/headphones for class.
    6. The hallways are marked with directional arrows, so you know which side to walk on – a good rule of thumb is to keep your right hand to the wall.
    7. We will be having fire drills, which will impact both hybrid and distance learning students. All students should look out for an advisory lesson that addresses this and be sure they know what their teachers’ expectations for DL students are during fire drills.

We all look forward to seeing you again this coming week!

    Brandon Wolfe Ed.D.

    Principal

A note from the Attendance office…

Please review the following information regarding absences, tardies, and early dismissals. Even in the virtual learning environment, the attendance office needs to know these instances for accurate attendance.

You can however request an early dismissal via Parent VUE, Permission Click, or by sending Tanja.Brandt@lcps.org an email. Make sure when you submit a request, that you enter the time that student needs to dismiss. SAT PREP CLASSES ON HOLD
One of the best programs our PFHS PTSO has facilitated with the help of our teachers, has been the SAT Prep Classes and the practice tests administered at our school over the past several years. It is the only one of it's kind that was available to all LCPS students. The teachers and the parent that spear-headed the program have all moved on to other endeavours this year. If you have an interest in being part of a committee that can find a new way to make this resource available, please let us know!

    Good afternoon!

The wait is over - students who selected hybrid for semester 2 will start coming to the building for classes this week, either Tuesday/Wednesday or Thursday/Friday. Since Tuesday is a teacher workday, that means students who have TW will miss their first A day and start classes for a B day on Wednesday, March 3.

Not sure which days your child is attending? Log on to ParentVUE/StudentVUE and select Student Info. Scroll down to Return-to-School. It will state if you are registered as 100% distance or Hybrid in-person and distance learning. Under S2 in person learning days, it will state whether you are either TW (attending Tuesdays and Wednesdays) or RF (attending Thursdays and Fridays).

Each day, students and all other visitors to the school building must complete the daily COVID symptom checker survey. A daily link to the survey will go to the primary parent email. The parent can choose to enter the student's cell phone number to receive a daily text to the link, as well. If you do not receive those, you can find the link on the bottom right of the PFHS website and on flyers on the outer doors. Before entering the building, you must show the completed survey with the green checkmark. If the survey does not approve your return to school, you must stay home. Parents/guardians are asked to inform the school using the Absentee Line (571-434-3202) or ParentVUE that their student will be absent.

As you enter the building through the front entrance, you must wear a face mask (covering the nose and mouth) and remove any hats, hoods and glasses so a thermal imaging camera will note your temperature. The camera will identify students, staff, and visitors that register an elevated temperature of 100.4°F or higher, so they can be isolated in the Care Room for verification and/or treatment. Staff will also randomly check temperatures with a no-touch thermometer.

Everyone in the building must wear a face mask and maintain social distancing. Hand sanitizer is available in strategic locations for your use. Each classroom has a special air filtration system and plastic shields on the desks to minimize transmission of germs. Common and high-touch areas are cleaned periodically throughout the day and the entire building is given a thorough cleaning each night.

Students should be in their 1st or 5th period classroom by 9:10am. We will hold advisory in the 1st/5th period classroom to minimize the number of times students change locations. If a student needs to leave the class for any reason, they should use the new e-Hallpass system. This handout explains how it works and why we use the system.

The cafeteria will supply FREE breakfast, lunch, snack and supper to ALL students. They will be bagged and ready for pickup before school (breakfast) and during lunch shifts. Pick up the snack and supper (if the parent sent a request to the principal ahead of time) at the end of the school day. There is no à la carte menu, only bagged meals.

Please help us keep everyone safe and provide a healthy environment for our students by coming to school prepared with the following each day:
    • Take the daily COVID survey. Have it up on your phone as you enter the building.
    • Wear a comfortable face mask. Your mouth & nose must be completely covered.
    • Bring your Chromebook & charger to participate in the lessons.
    • Bring your own headphones or earbuds with microphone for class discussions.
    • Be in your 1st/5th period classroom by 9:10am each day.

Feel free to view this presentation on Returning to the Building. We are looking forward to seeing our students back in the building this week!

    Dr. Brandon Wolfe
    Principal

A note from the Attendance office…

Please review the following information regarding absences, tardies, and early dismissals. Even in the virtual learning environment, the attendance office needs to know these instances for accurate attendance.

*Early Dismissals: Due to COVID mitigation strategies and for the safety of all, you will be unable to come into the school building to sign out your student for early dismissals.

    Thank You! 😊

We are reaching out to ask you to take part in our school survey if you didn't last week. Your responses are completely anonymous, and the survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

The last day to complete the survey is this Friday, February 26th. Please respond using the appropriate link below.

Thank you for taking part in this important initiative! We appreciate you!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Brandon Wolfe

    Principal

    Time Management Skills
On February 23 - 25, students in grades 9 - 11 will be working on activities during advisory that focus on time management skills. These activities are designed to help students manage their time this year and plan for next year. As students go through the process of selecting their courses for next year, we encourage them to think carefully about their schedules, including any responsibilities or activities that fall outside of the normal school day.

If you would like to view the activities, click on the links below:

    Message from the PTSO
Our PTSO General Meeting was packed with relevant information last Wednesday! A HUGE THANK YOU to our Assistant Principal, Mari Estrada for reviewing in detail the "Returning to School in Person" presentation!  It was such a complete overview of what our students can expect upon their return to the building.  We also appreciated the incredibly upbeat report from Mr. Wells on our Fine Arts Program. There is a WEALTH of talent at PFHS this year, from our instructors to our amazingly talented students!

As our second year as a PTSO Board winds down, we want to thank our incredible PFHS community for supporting every effort to share relevant information, and spread a little school spirit in our community. It is a privilege to serve our own students and teachers in this way.
If you would like to know more about joining a team who has found a way to make a difference, please reach out to us at: pfhs.ptso.president@gmail.com. We'd love to hear from you!

    Good afternoon!

Many of our students will be returning to the building starting this Tuesday. The remainder of our hybrid students return on Wednesday, March 3rd.

We are looking forward to seeing our students back in the building!

    Dr. Brandon Wolfe
    Principal

    BrightBytes Survey 2021
Our school is partnering with BrightBytes, a data analytics organization built specifically for K-12, to provide insights into our new and changing learning environments with the goal of ensuring equitable learning support for all students.

To gain these insights, we are asking students in grades 3-12, teachers, building administrators, and parents/guardians to participate in a short survey. Please know that all of your responses will remain anonymous to protect your privacy.

Your participation is extremely important to us. It will give us a comprehensive understanding of our school and students’ needs and areas for improvement. All responses will remain anonymous to protect participant privacy. The survey will take approximately 8-10 minutes to complete.

The data collection window is set to run from February 16 to 26. The unique survey links for each stakeholder group will be sent out via ConnectEd on Tuesday morning, when the survey opens

Thank you for your support with this important initiative! We appreciate you.

    Attention PFHS Families

In an effort to promote mental health awareness in our teens, the Unified Mental Health Team (UMHT) at Potomac Falls High School is sharing a presentation on Mental Health Matters for parents and caregivers. The presentation focuses on dispelling myths about mental health and suicide, how to talk with your child about mental health, and ways to seek help. This presentation is a companion to the one that all ninth grade students received on January 12th and 13th during Health and PE classes.  Their presentation educated students about resiliency and healthy ways to manage life’s stressors using the Sources of Strength model.  Help-seeking behaviors were taught for when students may be experiencing mental health struggles, including sharing their concerns with a trusted adult. If you have any questions about the presentations, please contact Dr. Gallup Larsen (psychologist) at Virginia.Larsen@lcps.org. If you or your child is in need of additional support, please contact your child’s counselor or Dr. Gallup Larsen.

Class of 2024 Hybrid Student Orientation

On Monday, February 8, Potomac Falls High School will welcome ninth grade students who chose the hybrid model of instruction for the second semester. Link Crew Leaders will take these students on a tour of PFHS. While we are not certain when LCPS will move to the hybrid model of concurrent learning, we are very excited to welcome members of our freshmen class to the building for a tour.

Tours will begin promptly at 9am and continue throughout the day. All students must wear a mask for the entirety of the tour. All students will have to pass a health screening before participating. All students should enter through the main entrance. If you arrive early, you will be asked to sit in the cafeteria until your scheduled tour time.

To maintain safety and proper social distancing, we will be following the schedule sent out to all families who chose the hybrid model of instructions for the second semester. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from PFHS.

In the event school buildings are closed due to inclement weather, the orientation will be rescheduled to a later date.

This tour is not required, but we hope you’ll join us for this event!

We look forward to meeting you in person,

    Brandon Wolfe
    Principal
