Poetry Out Loud Participants
Heritage High School of Leesburg, VA is proud to announce the winner and runner-up of their 2017/18 High School Poetry Out Loud Competition sponsored by the HHS English Honor Society. Heritage Hosted the Poetry Out Loud Competition in December. These finalists were selected from over 700 students who competed in the local Heritage competition. These students memorized two poems and demonstrated outstanding oratory skills. The winner, Somay Dubey, a 9th grader, will advance to the Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition on February 1st, 2018 at The Art Center at the Candy Factory in Manassas, VA from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Kiara Barientos, 9th grade, earned the runner-up title; she will also attend the competition. She will prepare in case Somay is unable to compete. The Annual Poetry Out Loud Competition is a national program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Through the expressive recitation of poems, students bring poems to life utilizing their rich literary tradition of storytelling. After the performers are judged on physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding, and overall performance, one of the six regional contestants will advance to the Virginia Poetry Out Loud State Finals in March to compete for a spot at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington D. C. in May. Heritage High School is proud to celebrate these outstanding finalists!
