Registration for the January 23, 2024 AMC-8 is available on the Stone Hill website. Go to Site Subjects and click on Online Payment Portal. Sign in or create an account to access the list of payment options. Register for the AMC-8. The window closes December 1st. The cost is $5. The contest will take place on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 after school. Pickup will be at 4:30pm. Parents: when purchasing this item please UNCHECK the box that says "PURCHASING FOR MYSELF" and enter your child's name.

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.AMC 8 provides an opportunity to apply the concepts taught at the junior high level to problems which not only range from easy to difficult but also cover a wide range of applications. Many problems are designed to challenge students. We want AMC 8 participation to be a positive experience for our students. However, if they are not exposed to problem solving or the curriculum covered by these concepts, it can be frustrating for them. Please sign up your child only if you think they are capable of handling the contest. Here are some sample questions from past AMC 8 to help you decide if AMC 8 is the right competition for your child:
- The hundreds digit of a three-digit number is 2 more than the units digit. The digits of the three-digit number are reversed, and the result is subtracted from the original three-digit number. What is the units digit of the result?
- A square and a circle have the same area. What is the ratio of the side length of the square to the radius of the circle?
- A bag contains four pieces of paper, each labeled with one of the digits 1, 2, 3 or 4, with no repeats. Three of these pieces are drawn, one at a time without replacement, to construct a three-digit number. What is the probability that the three-digit number is a multiple of 3?
- A lemming sits at a corner of a square with side length 10 meters. The lemming runs 6.2 meters along a diagonal toward the opposite corner. It stops, makes a 90-degree right turn and runs 2 more meters. A scientist measures the shortest distance between the lemming and each side of the square. What is the average of these four distances in meters?
