    We had a busy last week of February. Next week we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss.  We will be reading different books and doing different activities.  It's going to be a fun week.  I would like to use colored goldfish for an activity.  If there is a problem with this please let me know.  The students are working hard getting ready for their music show.  Mark your calendars.  We also had innovation lab this week.  We used Chattpix and Wixie to demonstrate their knowledge of matter.  Ask your child about it.

    If you haven't paid for the field trip the cost is $11.00 and the check should be made out to Round Hill Elementary. Chaperones will be picked next Wednesday.  We have had several people interested in going so I will put all slips in a hat and pull out three names.  We can only take three people because of  bus limitations.  I will let you know on Wednesday.  

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we continued our biography unit.  We will be learning about some Famous Americans.  We learning about Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, and Jackie Robinson. We also, started discussing the theme of a story.
    • In writing, we have been learning about the scientific process and taking it through the writing process. 
    • In math, we worked on learning probability.  We did many activities to show probability. You can use Dreambox and Prodigy at home.
    • In social studies, we learned about Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, and Jackie Robinson and what were their contributions.
    • In science, we continued learning about matter.  We did an experiment with an ice ball in it's three states.  Ask your child about it.

    It's hard to believe that the end of February is near.  We will be going on a field trip in March.  We are going to the Children's Science Center in Fair Oaks Mall.  The students are bring home a paper with information. The cost of the field trip is $11.00 and the check made out to Round Hill Elementary.  Here is a link to the permission slip: https://permission.click/JxlPn/us

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we will be starting a biography unit.  We will be learning about some Famous Americans.  We also, started discussing the theme of a story.

    • In math, we worked on graphing.  They collected data and then used graphs to display the data.  Then they analyzed the data.  We will be learning about probability next week.  You can use Dreambox and Prodigy at home.
    • In social studies, we learned about President Day and why it is important. 
    • In science, we are leaning about matter.  We did an experiment with candy.  Ask your child about it.

    Happy Valentines Day!  We had a blast today doing several fun activities today!  They loved creating their valentine bags and exchanging their valentine's. We also did two experiments this week.  They loved the one when we exploded the baggie with gas. We went to innovation lab to learn how to use chatter pics.  They so enjoyed it and will be using this program later.

    We had a wonderful week full of fun learning. We did a collaborative class poster for kindness week.  They loved working together to create the poster.  We learned about alliteration and wrote tongue twisters.  We did the three practice tests for the Cogat testing next week. Please continue to practice addition/subtraction facts.  

    For Valentine's Day there will NOT be a formal party.  It will be a valentine exchange with valentine activities throughout the day.  Students can bring in valentine's to exchange.  I sent home a list of student names for you.  LCPS policy states there can be NO candy given out with the valentines.  Please do not send in candy.  Thank you!

    • In writing, we have been learning about writing a personal narrative and taking it through the writing process.

    • In social studies, we learned about Benjamin Franklin and George Washington Carver and why they were important.

    I hope 2020 has been good to you so far.  We have been very busy here in second grade.  We have been working on PALS and DRA assessments.  Please practice addition/subtraction facts.  There are lots of dates listed in the Upcoming Events section below.  Please take a quick look.  Carver House won a pajama party.  They can wear pajamas next Wednesday.  Only the Carver House.

    • In social studies, we just finished learning the seven continents and the 5 oceans.  We will be moving into science next week and starting a unit on Magnets.
    • In coding, we are coding a comic strip.

    We had a very fun week.  The studeent had a great time in Innovation Lab building snow forts and testing them. We learned how the Lakota Tribe used pictured symbols for writing and made our own story. Today was so much fun with career day.  We were lucky enough to see three of our classroom dad's present their jobs to us. We also had Flashlight Friday during independent reading. Please remember to send in a picture with your child by Monday.  It should be a special moment so they can write about it with feeling.

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we continued our fiction unit on fantasy which includes fairytales, fables and folktales. We are learning about character traits, feelings and setting.
    • In writing, we have been learning about writing with feelings.  We have also continued learning cursive handwriting. 
    • In math, we finished subtraction strategies and will be learning about word problems. Please practice math facts at home. You can use Dreambox and Prodigy.
    • In social studies, we started learning about Native Americans.  We learned about the Lakota Sioux Indian tribe.  They learned what occupations they had, transportation, and homes. They are really enjoying studying the Native Americans.
    • In coding, we finished our Minecraft Dance Party and will be starting a new project next week.

    It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is next week.  Thank you so much for all the wonderful donations we received for the care packages.  We were able to make several care packages. The banners the students made turned out wonderful. Wednesday we went to innovation lab and coded Dash the Robot to travel all over the United States map.  Dash visited mountains and rivers we learned.  Next week, is a short week.  I will not be sending a newsletter.

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we continued our fiction unit on fantasy which includes fairy tales, fables and folktales. We are learning about character traits, feelings and setting.
    • In writing, we wrote about Thanksgiving.  We have also started learning cursive handwriting.

    What a great week!  We started with the Veteran's Day assembly.  Our class wrote letters to soldiers and we are making care packages and banners.  The banners turned out wonderful.  If you would like to donate to the care packages please have the items here by Monday.  Tuesday we had a speaker for the Jamestown/Yorktown Foundation here to talk to the students about the Powhatan Indians.  It was amazing and the kids loved it.  Wednesday we went to innovation lab and learned how to code Dash the Robot.

    A HUGE thank you to everyone who sent in batteries for the flashlights!!!

    Congratulations to our sea otter group.  They won for our class endangered animal project!  The Chores for Change will go towards adopting a sea otter.  WOW!  They did a great job with collecting change!  We collected $66.51 from our class.  Thank you to all who donated.  This was such an amazing learning experience for the students.  I'm so proud of them for their hard work.

    We have been doing Flashlight Fridays during reading time.  The flashlights have batteries and we are in need of some new ones.  If you can donate some AAA batteries that would be wonderful.  Thank You!
