    It's hard to believe that there is only one week left of school.  This year has gone by so quickly.  The students have grown so much over this school year.  The days are getting warmer, please send in a water bottle with your child each day. Please watch for any updates, as the end of the year gets very busy.  I SENT HOME AN ORANGE PIECE OF PAPER WITH ALL THE ACTIVTIES FOR NEXT WEEK.

    There will be NO MORE HOMEWORK for this school year!!!  Enjoy the warm afternoons and evening.  Please keep reading.

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we read fiction books.  Students have picked their own book series.
    • In writing, we wrote in our silkworm journals.  We have been working on cursive handwriting.  They should be able to write their name now. We are working on a class book about butterflies as part of our PBL project.
    • In math, we finished our geometry unit.  We learned about area and perimeter.  They enjoyed making an area robot.
    • In science, we are studying the life cycle of the butterfly and silkworm.  They love their silkworms! We have been working on our PBL project.

    Up Coming Events:

    • June 3 is House Day - wear your house color and bring lunch if you can.
    • June 4 is Field Day - Wear your tie dye shirt we made at the beginning of the year. (blue) Make sure they have a water bottles with a name on it. Pack your lunch if you can.
    • June 5 is Third Grade Training Camp Day - Please bring a towel.
    • June 6 End of the Year Party 12:00-1:30
    • June 7 Last Day for Students

    It's hard to believe that there is only two weeks left of school.  This year has gone by so quickly.  The students have grown so much over this school year.  The days are getting warmer, please send in a water bottle with your child each day. Please watch for any updates, as the end of the year gets very busy.  I want to thank everyone for all the wonderful things that were sent in for Teacher Appreciation.  It was so thoughtful and kind.  I loved the kids responses to the Mad Libs! LOL!!

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we read fiction books.  We did and author study with Robert Munsch Books.  They loved the different books. We reviewed some skills such as: retellings, problem/solution, making a connection, and author's purpose.
    • In writing, we wrote about the different Robert Munsch stories.  We have been working on cursive handwriting.  
    • In math, we have been working on our geometry unit.  They are having fun with learning shapes and symmetry.
    • In science, we are studying the life cycle of the butterfly and silkworm.  Each student has a silkworm they are responsible for and its care.  They love their silkworms!

    I can't believe we are already in the month of May.  Time is flying by so fast.  It was a super busy week.  The students enjoyed ACES(school-wide freeze tag game), book fair, we planted more flowers, and a scavenger hunt.  As we are having more warmer days, please send in a water bottle with your child each day. Please watch for any updates, as the end of the year gets very busy.

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we read fiction books.  We are doing book club groups and they are discussing the books they have read.  They are having wonderful discussions about their books.
    • In writing, we wrote opinion paragraphs on favorite cookie and what makes the best pet.
    • In math, we finished our unit on fractions this week. We did lots of fair share problems and comparing fractions.  Each student planned and drew a garden with fractions. Next week we will start telling time.  Please continue to practice addition/subtraction facts. Students should be using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  These programs are great! 
    • In social studies, we continued our unit on economics.  We discussed producer/consumer, and the  different types of resources. (human, capital, and nature)

    Welcome back from Spring Break.  We celebrated Earth Day with several activities.  We had House Lunch and Meeting on Thursday. Don't forget tonight is Family Movie Night.  Lots of fun activities to do on a raining night, plus a movie.  Also, check out the online silent auction.  Lots of great items, hint, hint I have an item.:-)

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we have switched back to fiction.  They are reading books in a series and loving it!
    • In writing, we wrote a friendly letter to earth.  We also started writing opinion paragraphs.
    • In math, we have been working on fractions this week. We have been doing lots of fair share problems and comparing fractions.  Please continue to practice addition/subtraction facts. Students should be using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  These programs are great! 
    • In science, we celebrated Earth Day!  We learned some ways to help the environment and planted zucchini seeds.
    • In social studies, we start our unit on economics.  We discussed wants/needs and good/services.
    • Word Study Test next Friday, May 3rd.

    We have been very busy this week with coding our Famous American Robot for the next Epic Build.  They are so excited to share them with you on Tuesday, April 9. We have also been finishing our I-movie on weather.  Hopefully they will be able to show you them at the Epic Build on Tuesday.  We also did a STEM activity that they had to design and create a structure that would stand up to a storm.  They were very creative with their structures.

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we continued working on non-fiction.
    • In math, we have been counting money this week. Please continue to practice addition/subtraction facts. Students should be using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  These programs are great! 
    • In science, we have been working on finishing our weather unit this week. The students have been enjoying studying about them.  We have also learned how to be prepared for them. They have been working on finishing their Public Service Announcement.
    • In coding, we are working on building and coding our famous American robot. We are excited about the next Epic Build.

    • Report Cards are live today at 3:00pm.
    • Epic Build 3 is Tuesday, April 9. Starts in the gym at 8:30am. Come to the at 9:00am - 9:45am.

    Exciting news, the class earned their 30 class points and had lunch in the classroom today.  So proud of them!  We have been very busy this week with coding our Famous American Robot for the next Epic Build.  They are learning so much.  We also started our PBL weather project.  We have been studying different types of storms and how to be prepared for them.  The students have been doing research and will be making a public service announcement about a storm.  They will be going to the Innovation Lab next Tuesday to practice their public service announcement and record it.  We will also be taking the Reading Maps test next week.

    I will be out tomorrow, Friday for a family funeral.  

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we are working on non-fiction and main idea and details.
    • In math, we have been counting money this week.  Have your child practice counting money at home. Please continue to practice addition/subtraction facts. Students should be using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  These programs are great! 
    • In science, we have been working on our weather unit this week. We learned about types of clouds, seasons, tornadoes, thunderstorms, hurricanes, and blizzards. The students have been enjoying studying about them.  We have also learned how to be prepared for them.
    • In writing, we are working on main idea and paragraphs.  
    • In coding, we are working on building and coding our famous American robot. We are excited about the next Epic Build.

    What an exciting Spirit Week we have had leading up to the big game tonight! Don't forget the Volleyball Game tonight @ 7pm at Loudoun Valley High School. We celebrated Dr Seuss this week by reading some of his books.  The students loved listening to them. I would encourage you to read some at home.  Thank you so much to all who sent in glue sticks.  

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we read several Dr. Seuss books and did activities with them. The students had such a great time listening to them.  We did some writing activities with them and a STEM activity.
    • In math, we finished our unit on probability.  We will be starting money next week. Please continue to practice addition/subtraction facts. Students should be using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  These programs are great! 
    • In science, we are learning about the water cycle.  We did an experiment making a water cycle.  The students learned a song about the water cycle. Next week, we will start our weather unit.  
    • In writing, we made up an animal and wrote about it to celebrate Dr. Seuss. It went with the book "If I Ran the Zoo". This will lead us into paragraph writing.
    • In coding, we are working on building and coding our Famous American robot.
    • Word Study Test next Friday, March 15th.

    Up Coming Events:

    • Second Grade Family Art Night is Wednesday, March 13 @ 6:00-7:30pm
    • Second Grade Family Art Night is designed to be a fun-filled night of exploring, experimenting and creating art. It is an opportunity to get away from the TV and to spend time together as a family. Each family will travel through art stations and create an art project together, as a family. Family members will not travel separately through stations but will be asked to stay together to complete an art project. The goal of the night is to create art together as a family, show off artistic talents and have some fun.
    • Third Quarter Ends March 28.

    It has been a very busy week.  We had a lot going on with different projects.  We did a graphing project where the students surveyed the class and made a bar and pictograph graph about the their data. We studied famous Americans, did an experiment with the scientific method, and our robotics project.  We are in need of glue sticks.  If you could send some in with your child I would appreciate it.

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we have been reading about Famous Americans and learning about main idea and details.  Ask your child about: Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, Abe Lincoln, and Jackie Robinson.
    • In math, we finished our unit on graphing and will be working on probability.  They had such a fun time with graphs.  Please continue to practice addition/subtraction facts. Students should be using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  These programs are great! 
    • In science, we are using the scientific method.  We did an experiment using different candies in liquids. They had to go through the whole process.  
    • In writing, we wrote our second lab book about the candy experiment.  
    • In coding, we continued with our robotic project.  We created a robot and coded it to move.

    This has been one busy week with 2 hour delays and Cogat Testing.  The students did a wonderful job putting forth their best effort on the testing.  The Valentine's Exchange was a blast and the students loved the hot chocolate bar. We are in need of glue sticks.  If you could send some in with your child I would appreciate it.

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we have been doing the Reader's Workshop.  We continued reading fiction. We are focusing on figurative language.  We discussed similes and personification.  
    • In math, we finished our unit on double digit subtraction and started our unit on graphing.  Please continue to practice addition/subtraction facts. Students should be using Reflex and Dreambox at home.  These programs are great! 
    • In science we finished our unit on matter this week and we are moving into learning the scientific method. 
    • In writing, we will be writing lab books about different experiments to help learn the scientific method. We started our first lab this week.
    • In coding, we started our robotic project.  We practiced with the Lego kits and logged into the Lego program and started creating.

    The students did an AMAZING job with their performance today!  So proud of them and their efforts.  Remember we will be testing next week. Please have your child here on time. You can send in Valentine boxes when they are finished.  Ask your child about the awesome experiment we did with an ice ball.

    Here are a few highlights from the last few weeks:

    • In reading, we have been doing the Reader's Workshop.  We continued reading fiction. We are focusing on figurative language.  We discussed similes and idioms.

    • In science we learned about matter this week. The difference between a solid, liquid, and gas.  How they can change from one state to another states if you add heat.
    • In writing, we continued our unit on narrative writing.  We started a snow day story.  We focused on the beginning of the writing. How will you hook the reader?  They came up with some creative ways to open a story. 

    Up Coming Events:

    • Cognitive Abilities Test will be given on February 13, 14, and 15. Please make sure your child is here on time.  We will start testing at 8:15am.
    • Valentines Day Exchange - Thursday, February 14.  We will exchange cards only.          NO PARTY (per LCPS policy - no food/candy can be given out with the valentines) A note was sent home about making a box with your child.  Please send them in by Thursday.
    • Bingo Night is Friday, February 22.
