• Dentist Visit!

Posted by Melanie Pearson on 2/29/2016

We ended our very busy month of February with a visit from a local dentist.  The students learned about how to keep their teeth healthy and the right kinds of foods to eat.  They also got to try on some of the things that a real dentist wears in the office.  Thank you to Little Smiles for coming out and helping us celebrate Dental Health Month!

  • PBL Project - Birdfeeders!

Posted by Melanie Pearson on 2/19/2016

We had a great time with our first Project Based Learning activity in Kindergarten.  We had a special presentation about birds from the National Wildlife Conservatory, then went to work planning how we could help birds in the winter time by making birdfeeders.  The students were split into groups of 3 and first planned and sketched their ideas, then made their own birdfeeders!  I know the birds around Creighton's Corner were happy to have some extra food during our snowy February!

    TeacherVUE

I wasn't expecting a delay this morning, so I didn't get a chance to give everybody a head's up - but it looks like you all figured it out!  As the note in folders today said, there will be no snack time on shortened days.  We were so busy trying to cram everything into two hours that I don't think anyone missed it today!  I don't want to jinx anything by actually typing the words, but it looks like this week and next week could be really short, so keep your eyes on the news and be prepared for some days at home! :)

We are doing some snowman activities in class this week and really working on using descriptive words in our writing.  We have added "here" and "when" to our Word Wall.  Last week, we learned the Two Vowel Rule in phonics.  See if your student can say it for you, and practice reading words with two vowels (cape, boat, cube, bike, ect.)  Continue practicing counting by 5's - many students are getting hung up on 15 and 20.  We started talking about addition today and will be practicing it the rest of the week.  Try not to let your student get into the habit of using their fingers.  If they need a visual, give them a set of something small to count out like pennies or legos.  Their fingers won't help them when they are adding past 10!

It's hard to believe that we will be finishing out second quarter next week - we are almost half way done!!  I have been seeing ALOT of improvement in reading and writing, and I can tell that everyone is working really hard.  Keep it up - I can't wait to see how much we can learn the second half of the year!

  • December is Here!

Posted by Melanie Pearson on 12/1/2015

As you have probably heard, there is a Gingerbread Man on the loose in our school.  The students have enjoyed hunting for him and doing lots of Gingerbread Man activities the past couple of days.  Who knows?  Maybe we'll catch him by Friday!  This week we are working on counting by 5's and learning about the nickel.  We are also doing some measuring and continuing to work on telling time to the hour. We have learned the special sounds "th", 'sh", and "ch", and our new Word Wall Words are "with" and "of".  I have started working with small reading groups, and we are learning some strategies to help us figure out words we don't know.  The first and most important one is to look at the first letter and "get your mouth ready" to say that beginning sound.  Be sure to have your student start sounding out some words as you're reading in the evenings.  December Enrichment Calendars were sent home in folders today - this is another great way to reinforce what we're doing in class.  Enjoy your week, and keep an eye out for that Gingerbread Man!

  • An Exciting Week Ahead

Posted by Melanie Pearson on 10/4/2015

We are gearing up for a very exciting week!  Of course, our field trip to Ballentine Farm is at the top of the list of exciting events this week.  Having grown up on the coast of Florida, I have seen my share of hurricanes - I was sure glad to see Joaquin head out to sea and not ruin our day at the farm! It looks like we will have a beautiful day on Tuesday, but I'm sure it will still be pretty muddy so make sure your child wears some old shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Thank you so much to all the parents who have volunteered to chaperone.  Please review the reminder page that was sent home last week.  We will be sending another one tomorrow in case you missed the first one.

The students are also VERY excited about finishing up our review of the alphabet and finishing their letter books. We will be sending home the books on Friday. Please use them to review the correct formation of the letters when writing and to review letter sounds. Our Word Wall Words this week are "all", "to", "and", and "like".  In math, we will continue to work on patterns, sorting, and recognizing and writing numbers 1-25.

Finally, I hope you will join us at 6:30 on Thursday for Math Night.  There will be some fun math activities for the students to do in each of the Kindergarten classrooms.  Hope to see you there!
