Wow, what a great week!  Thank you for coming in to help celebrate our American Education Week.  I know that the students loved seeing their family and friends during their special day and activity.  I want to thank our staff for being so accepting and flexible with their daily schedules and activities to include our community, family and friends.  Here are a couple of pictures from our American Education activities in the classroom.

    SCIENCE EXPO

We had a great time at our Science Expo on Thursday.  There were flying paper airplanes, walking water, flight simulators, parachutes, and a lot of coding.  The biggest attraction was our BATTLE BOT ARENA.  Although the designs were so well made that we did not pop a lot of balloons, we had a great time watching the robots go after each other.  Join me in thanking our staff of volunteers.  After 5 years of being here, it still amazes me how dedicated and hardworking this staff is.  We are all very fortunate to be working together to provide an exceptional educational experience for your children.

Next week is the book fair!  We have "preview days" for the kids Monday-Wednesday, where they will be making wish lists of books that they like.  Books will be available for purchase Wednesday from 3-5pm and Thursday from 5-8pm. In addition, students can purchase books anytime during the day on Thursday and until 12pm on Friday. We accept cash and checks (made out for the exact amount) from students and will also accept credit cards from adults. Happy reading!

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN

In the spirit of Halloween, we are inviting any of our students to dress up as their favorite story book character.  Again, please do not go out and buy anything, especially with Halloween costumes Tuesday evening.  If your child would like to, they may dress up as their favorite story book character on Tuesday, October 31st.  I am sure we will see a couple of Harry Potters, Dr. Seuss', Diary of a Wimpy kid, and Percy Jackson's.  Can't wait to see who shows up on Tuesday.

    National Bullying Prevention Awarness Month

    u

October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month.  This month, people all over unite to think about what bullying is, how bullying should be addressed, and to make goals for where we want to be in the future when it comes to bullying and bullying prevention.  October 25th through October 27th, Dominion Trail will be focusing on what bullying is and how to deal with it.

We will also participate in school wide events to build awareness.

Wednesday, October 25th will be Unity Day—wear ORANGE to unite together against bullying; be united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

Thursday will be pajama day—wear your favorite PJ’s to “lay the idea of bullying to rest”, no slippers please!

Friday will be Superhero day —wear your favorite superhero gear(no masks please) to “stand up and take action to help each other when you witness bullying.”

Please do not feel that you have to buy anything for this day.  A simple t-shirt, or cape, or cutting out the letter 'A" for Captain America would be fine.  With people celebrating Halloween, we do not want anyone to feel that they have to buy something for their child(ren) to wear.

Please encourage your child to participate!

    We need your help!!!

I want to thank all of the families that have already donated to our "No Frills Fundraiser" to support our school and students. We are close to $8,000 but still shy of our goal of $10,000.

The money raised does go towards a lot of programs that benefit your children.  I always share at the PTA meetings, "We cannot provide the high educational experience we do without the support of the PTA and parents."

The money donated is used to provide your students with field trips, agendas, multiple online subscriptions in reading and math, assemblies, materials in the classroom, celebrations and recognitions and much much more. We want to continue to provide these resources to our students.  That is why we need your help.  If you haven't donated and are able to, please do so by going to https://www.lcps.org/Page/116717

It is amazing to see a room filled with parents, at our PTA meetings, who are meeting to discuss how to support the classroom teachers, provide some safe, engaging classroom celebrations and mobilize support for our PTA events.  It is truly inspiring to see our community come together in support of our students. If you would like to be involved we would love to love to have your support.  Please visit the PTA website for information.  https://www.lcps.org/Page/44830   Thank you for donating.

DTES Spirit Week supporting Broad Run Homecoming 10/16 - 10/20

We are helping support Broad Run's Homecoming Week.  Below are a couple of fun things we will be doing to show our support for them.

Monday – Tacky Tourist Day, Dress up as a tourist, ready for Vacation (No swim suits and mind the weather).

Tuesday  – Wear a class color, Preschool Yellow, Kindergarten yellow, 1st Pink, 2nd Red, 3rd Green, 4th Orange, 5th Blue.

Wednesday – School Picture Day, Look your best

    Thursday – Crazy Hair/Hat Day

Friday – Spirit Day, DTES colors of purple and Teal, or Broad Run colors of maroon and gold.

    Reading Incentive Calendars and Letters

Instead of the Pizza Hut Book-It Reading Incentive Program, Dominion Trail students will be participating in a DTES At-Home Reading Incentive Program.  You may have already seen the first exciting reward come home!  Every DTES student in grades 1-5 earned a Manhattan Pizza gift card for a personal pizza.  This reward was given to every student that met with their teacher to create a reading goal in which they could strive to meet each month.  Kindergarten students have made a class goal and earned an in-school reward.  With your encouragement, students should be reading “just right” books at home to help meet their monthly goal.  ALL K-5 Students will fill out the monthly calendar or a class reading log and bring it back at the end of each month to earn another exciting reward. If you have any questions, please email our reading specialists, Sarah Kingsolver or Jennifer Heidary.

    Happy Reading Huskies!

     Refrigerator Donation:

We are looking to have a WORKING refrigerator donated to our school to keep the unopened packaged food fresh.  We are working on finding a program that will come pick up the food during the week and take it to families in need within the surrounding areas. An example of the programs the food could go to would be LINK Against Hunger or Loudoun Hunger Relief.  If you know of anyone that is wanting to get rid of a working refrigerator, please have them call Mr. Joseph at 571-252-2340.  Thank you.

Safety Drills - Fire and Lock down

Parents, the VA law requires that schools  have a fire drill each week for the first month of school and then 1 each month for the remainder of the year.  We are also required to hold 2 lock down drills during the first month of school and then 2 additional drills after January.  We have had one lock down drill and two fire drills so far and they went extremely well and the students did a great job!  .

    Math Club

    Hello DTES Families,

We have had an overwhelming interest in the after school math club this year. We filled the 20 slots pretty fast. Mrs Bracken and Mrs Martin opened an additional 5 slots and those are now full as well. Any checks handed in will be returned.

We still have After School Enrichment Programs offered this fall. Please check out https://em-dominiontrail.jumbula.com/#/fall-2017. Classes are filling up fast- Science with Slime is already full.

For those 4th graders returning next year, we will be offering Math Club again next year. And for those moving onto Farmwell, they have a wonderful Math Club also.

If you have any questions, then please contact Heather Snyder at tournamentofmath@gmail.com.

    ASEP Registration is now OPEN

The Dominion Trail PTA is excited to offer an After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) for its students this school year! We have three exciting sessions planned in the Fall, Winter and Spring - with a wide variety of classes from which to choose.   There is something for everyone. Please see the PTA website for more information
