9 - LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!

What a great time we had this past week.  I cannot believe that it is already June and only one more week of school.  I hope that you all are able to sit with your children to think and talk about all of the great activities and experiences they had this year.  We certainly did.  We are not done yet.  Very busy week coming up!  Hope you all can join us tonight for our End Of Year Picnic!

Here are a couple of pictures from our fantastic Field Day!  Thanks Mrs. Dabbenigno and Mrs. Golden. It was AWESOME!

Camping Out With a Good Book!
We are having our Summer Reading Kick Off Event, Camping Out with a Good Book, on June 6th. Grade levels will be joining Mrs. Kingsolver and Mrs. Root, our reading specialists, at our Husky Campground (DTES backyard) to hear Camping Stories and all about our Summer Reading Program. They will enjoy a sweet treat and then walk away with our summer reading BINGO board of activities for the summer and a FREE book to get them started on their summer reading.  Students will also be able to enjoy reading in the tents in our campground.  Should be a great time.  We hope you are able to encourage your child(ren) to participate in the summer reading program.  There might be some fun activities planned for those who do when we return next year (hint hint...)

    Lunch Charges End Today!
Today was the last day for any student, who forgot their lunch money, to charge a meal to their account.  If you need to know if your son or daughter has enough money on their lunch account for the rest of the year, please check online or call our office at 571-252-2340.

This week was our last grade level SOL assessment.  I couldn't be prouder of our incredible kids and teachers.  They have worked so hard to do their best on our state tests.  We try not to put too much pressure on children but as we know, in their quest to make you and their teachers proud, the children put a lot of pressure on themselves. As we have told them, we are proudest when they do their best, regardless of the score.  Whatever happens with the scores, know that our school is commited to providing your children with the best possible education that we can provide.  Thank you so much for you continued support of Dominion Trail Elementary.  This is truly a fantastic school and community.

What another week at the Trail.

    Field Day & Sunscreen

Parents are encouraged to apply sunscreen at home before sending students to school.

If reapplication of sunscreen is necessary, the parent/guardian must bring the sunscreen

to the health office and complete an Authorization for Medication form.

Students’ sunscreen is stored in the Health Office, and the student will report to the Health Office to reapply sunscreen to his/herself (staff do not re/apply sunscreen to students).

The parent/guardian must pick up the sunscreen from the Health Office by the end of the school year.

What another week at the Trail.  It has been great talking to all of the students about their after school activities.  It is unfortunate how much rain we have been seeing lately as that has made it a nightmare on a lot of practices and scheduling of different sport activities.  I know that our family has had 6 baseball games scheduled this week and that is only with 2 baseball players in the family.  I hope you all are able to have a relaxing weekend with family and friends and are able to enjoy that special time. A huge congratulations to our school for being recognized by the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) as one of two schools in the county for our excellence in supporting special education.  A huge thank you to the Davidson family for our nomination. At the ceremony, it was Grant's birthday and the entire audience sang him happy birthday.  A very special day for all of us.

Childhood Cancer Awareness and Birthday Celebration / Official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ Attempt
    01:00 PM - 04:00 PM

On Saturday, April 8th, 2017 – Alex’s Army is coming together as #onevoice with many other childhood cancer focused organizations from the NOVA area and will attempt to break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the Most people performing push ups!!! You heard us right – and YOU’RE INVITED! This FREE event will be held on what would have been our Alex’s 13th Birthday and will be held not only to honor not only him, but to honor ALL children who are fighting, have fought, and will fight childhood cancers. We will have food trucks, powerful guest speakers, an Official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ judge onsite, music, games, kids’ entertainment, and MORE! We will even be presenting a trophy to the High School, Middle School, and Elementary School with the MOST participants – so grab your friends, spread the word, and JOIN US on April 8th for a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of a real GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ attempt! The Record: This is NOT a record attempt for the amount of push ups but rather a mass attempt for the Most people performing push ups for 1 minute! The current record is 1645 people and we are looking to have at least 2000 people registered to participate…in order to accomplish this WE NEED YOU! Why Push ups? Our Alex had an alarm on his phone for “20 push-ups” twice a day. In early 2016, when he went into hospice care people started sending us their push-up videos and started the hashtag #Twenty4Alex! Our family was so touched by these gestures of love and Alex was so humbled to think people were so inspired by him to do that. Alex, like so many other young children faced with fighting cancer, embodied strength, courage, and determination. This event will honor every child who is battling, has battled, and who will battle this devastating disease in a unique and powerful way! Alex's Army is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to fund research for childhood cancers, raise awareness, and to provide Christian focused support to families impacted by Childhood Cancers.

    SNOW!!!

I am sure that you all enjoyed some fun times on Tuesday and Wednesday with our days off.  Tuesday was the perfect day for sledding and snowman making while Wednesday was a little harder when everything froze.  I hope you all were able to make a couple of memories during this small snow storm.

I wanted to take this time to thank our PTA for funding $4000.00 worth of teacher grants for various equipment, books, and other materials for the classroom.  These materials and equipment will help implement our curriculum in better ways as well as give us more resources to use with the children.  Thank you so much for you continued support.

    Math Tournament Thanks

The PTA would like to thank Fairfax Collegiate for their generous sponsorship of the 4th Annual Loudoun County Regional Math Tournament. Their supports helps pay registration fees, materials, and supplies for the tournament, which provides a great mathematical opportunity for 200 local students to challenge themselves. Fairfax Collegiate, with two locations in Ashburn, offers enriching classes in the arts, film making, public speaking, writing, as well as science, math, and robotics. Please feel free to visit their website at www.FarifaxCollegiate.com or read about the great opportunities in their brochure ( https://fairfaxcollegiate.com/Content/Fairfax-Collegiate-Summer-2017.pdf).
