    Math Center Philosophy

The Freedom High School Math Center uses student tutors to help students increase their comprehension of mathematical concepts. We believe that peer math tutors can provide unparalleled service to students struggling with their math courses. Peers can provide assistance and clarification of math topics. Access to tutors during the school day provides an essential element for helping students be successful in their mathematics classes. A math tutor facilitates learning as a guide or coach, not as an evaluator. The tutor builds a student's confidence as he/she experiences increments of success in their math courses.

    Math Center Ethics
Having a code of ethics is essential for a tutor to be effective. Tutors are expected to maintain a high level of integrity and interpersonal character. To earn others' trust and develop a strong tutorial relationship, peer tutors demonstrate:
    • Honesty, openness, and an empathetic attitude,
    • Active concern, positive regard, genuine acceptance, and friendliness,
    • Respect for and appreciation of differences,
    • An ability to maintain confidentiality and the boundaries of their role learned in the tutor training seminars.
