    Bullying is a problem in many spheres of our culture: it can happen in homes, in the workplace, and unfortunately in public schools. Public schools are in a unique position to educate children and adolescents about its presence and negative consequences.  

     

    LCPS has adopted policies which follow Virginia’s 2013 General Assembly definition of bullying which is (§ 22.1-276.01 the Code of Virginia):

     

    “Bullying means any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended

    to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived

    power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is

    repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. ‘Bullying’

    includes cyber bullying. ‘Bullying’ does not include ordinary teasing,

    horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

    Bullying is characterized by the following:

    • Intentionally aggressive behavior designed to inflict harm;

    • Repetitive behavior planned into the future;

    • Interpersonal relationship marked by an imbalance of power.

    Bullying behavior can include behaviors which are physical, emotional or using technology.

    At Dominion Trail Elementary School, we are committed to teaching our students what bullying behaviors look like, how to respond to these behaviors, the importance of being an “Upstander” when you see mean and bullying behaviors, and reporting mean and bullying behaviors to an adult.  These behaviors are taught through our PBIS curriculum, through classroom guidance lessons, and through role plays with students.

    Typically, the unkind behaviors we see are not true “bullying” by the state definition.  THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT UNKIND BEHAVIORS ARE OKAY OR SHOULD BE TOLERATED.  We do, unfortunately, see mean, rude and unkind behaviors on occasion.  As we teach our students, we cannot control what others say or do, but we can control the way in which we respond to others.  We want our DTES students to learn to self-advocate, understand the repercussions of mean and unkind behaviors, and to stand up for themselves and also for their peers.  We are committed to creating a climate of kindness, respect and tolerance for all DTES students.

    All Dominion Trail students are taught the STOP, WALK, and TALK model.  We also teach our students to PAUSE AND THINK before they act upon impulses.  These lessons are taught through classroom guidance lessons and reinforced through teacher led classroom meetings, school wide activities, and through our school wide PBIS program.
