• CHEMISTRY is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes.                                   

     

    To the Students and Parents:  The following information is provided to help you understand what is expected in this course.  If you (students or parents) have any questions about this material, do not hesitate to ask about it.

     The class follows a rather standard progression through 18 chemistry topics.  As we cover each topic, there will be notes, homework (HW) assignments, worksheets, activities/labs, review materials, and one or more assessments.  A typical topic will span 4-5 class periods.  

     This “Purple Packet” contains the notes, worksheets, homework, and review material for the entire year and you must bring it to class every day.  The notes pages have plenty of blank space so the teacher can elaborate on concepts with examples not included in the notes.  There are several worksheets for each topic that will be assigned as classwork or homework while we cover each topic. Please keep the Purple Packet in a three ring binder with pockets;  this protects it from wear and tear and it gives you a place to keep activities/labs, quizzes, tests, and any other handouts that are given in class. 

     GRADING: 

     Formative Assessments:  Do not impact the quarterly grade but this practice helps students prepare for the Summative Assessments.

    - Homework is assigned several times for each topic and checked in class.  Grades are assigned on a zero to ten scale.  Zero indicates that no attempt was made.  Ten indicates that most or all of the assignment was completed but this does not reflect mastery.  

    - Labs – In chemistry we try to do one or two labs for each of the 18 topics we cover.  Your lab grade is based upon your performance during the lab as well as the written materials turned in upon completion of the lab.    YOU MUST HAVE BEEN PRESENT AND ACTUALLY HAVE DONE THE LAB WORK IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR A LAB REPORT.  Usually, but not always, missed lab work may be made up during FLEX. If a lab cannot be made up, then a paper may be assigned on the topic of the missed lab activity to serve as the make-up lab.

     Summative Assessments: 

    Tests are given at the conclusion of each topic and the dates are announced when a topic is begun.  Tests must be made-up before the next test is given or a zero will be entered for your grade.  We spend 4 to 5 class days on each topic, which is 8 to 10 school days; this is more than enough time to make up any missed test.  It is the STUDENT’s responsibility to schedule a make-up time immediately upon return to school.  Failure to schedule a make up before the next test will result in a zero. 

    Lab Quizzes are scheduled each quarter.  The dates for these tests/quizzes will be announced in advance.  These tests will evaluate the students’ understanding of the purpose, procedures, analyses, conclusions, etc. that were covered in the labs from that quarter.  

    - Quizzes often cover the previous night’s homework assignment or the previous day’s class work.   So, be ready for a quiz, often unannounced, at any time.

    Projects are assigned when the material cannot be assessed using tests or quizzes.  

     Retakes on SUMMATIVE assessments?  Achieving mastery of the chemistry content should be the goal of every student.  At PFHS we believe that a grade between 100% to 80% (A or B) demonstrates mastery of the content.  Any Summative Assessment score below an 80% (B-) may be retaken to improve your demonstration of mastery.  The retake must be completed within a timeline established between the student and teacher.  The retake score will replace the original score to a maximum of 80%.  Here are two examples of how this will be handled.  Student A earns a 60% on the original and student B earns an 87%.  Student A completes a retake and demonstrates mastery (80% or higher) and the score will be changed from a 60% to an 80%.  Student B has already demonstrated mastery and may not retake the assessment.

    CORE PERIOD:  The CORE Period will be utilized to solve issues that may arise throughout the year.  This period will be used to make-up labs, quizzes, or tests for absences.  All students must come prepared with schoolwork during the CORE period.  Students who need help should ask questions during the flex period. 

    MAKE-UP WORK:  Students are responsible for homework even when absent from class.  You notebook contains a unit by unit schedule, including up coming Tests and Quizzes.  It is the student’s responsibility to ask the teacher about work they have missed.  If a test or quiz is missed, the student must schedule a make-up time immediately upon returning to school.  Make-up tests and quizzes can occur during the CORE period.  If the scheduled test is missed or not made up before next test, then the test will become a ZERO.

    ABSENCES FOR SCHOOL FUNCTIONS:  These are known in advance so it your responsibility to make appropriate arrangements with your teacher.  These arrangements should occur before the absence and that may mean coming in on a B day to show you teacher the work even though your class meets on an A day.

    ATTENDANCE:  It is unacceptable to be tardy to class. Tardiness will result in morning D-Hall if it occurs without an excused pass.

    CLASS CONDUCT:  No “horseplay” of any sort will be allowed in the classroom or the laboratory. Such behavior in a chemistry lab results in danger to the health and safety of the other students and will not be tolerated.  No person has the right to behave in such a way as to interfere with the legitimate rights, or hurt the feelings, of other people. Foul language and disrespectful treatment of anyone will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.  Considerate, courteous, cooperative and mature behavior is expected.

    MATERIALS:

    1. Pencils and pens are required. Some students like colored pens/pencils for taking notes; this approach is encouraged since it has been found to increase information retention.
    2. 3 Ring Binder for Purple Packet and other papers.
    3. Scientific Calculators should always be brought to class: TI-30xs or better.
    4. Closed-toed shoes and long pants are required on days we have labs.

     Never bring to class

    – Food, drinks, gum, candy and other items prohibited by school policy.  Food and drinks may be thrown away for your safety.  

     Electronic devices are prohibited during class. 

    - Inappropriate use of electronic devices will result in confiscation and they will be turned over to the main office.
