Welcome to First Grade!
I’m delighted to welcome you and your child to my class for the 2021-2022 school year! I’m looking forward to a great year ahead!
First, I want to tell you a little bit about myself. I’ve spent my whole teaching career here at Sycolin Creek...this is a great place to be! I taught kindergarten for four years and first grade for six; this year will be my eleventh year as an educator.
I love first grade for many reasons but at the top of my list is the tremendous academic growth students make during their time in my class. It’s a true honor to watch them progress and make amazing strides across all subject areas, especially reading.
In first grade, we spend our mornings focusing on literacy skills. We read, write, and develop strong phonics skills. We spend our afternoons learning a variety of math skills and exploring social studies, science, and health topics. Each day we have at least one special: P.E., Music, Art, Library, Guidance, or SEARCH.
Back to School Night for grades 1-3 will take place on the evening of Tuesday, August 24th from 5:45-7:05pm. This event will be an opportunity for parents to visit the classroom and learn what will be happening this year in first grade. Open House for grades 1-5 will take place on Wednesday, August 25th from 10:00-11:00am. This will be a time for students and parents to visit the classroom, drop off school supplies, meet new classmates, and visit with me.
I value teamwork and feel strongly that building a solid teacher-parent partnership is crucial to your child’s success in first grade. I’m looking forward to getting to know you and building that partnership in the coming weeks!
