Sycolin Creek Physical Education Program
The Physical Education Program is designed to teach individual concepts in athletics and develop the relationship between physical activity and good health. Emphasis is placed on the values of cooperation, sportsmanship, mutual support, trust, and the respect for the abilities of others. Students at Sycolin Creek ES participate in Physical Education three times a week in thirty - minute blocks. Content areas for all grades include physical fitness activities, locomotors skill development, manipulative skills, spatial awareness, social skills and low organized games.
Fourth and Fifth graders participate in VA Wellness Physical Fitness Testing two times each school year. Their best scores count toward passing VA Wellness State Standards. The tests include the following parts of physical fitness, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, abdominal strength, flexibility, and upper arm strength. The tests include pacer, curl-ups, backsaver sit and reach/shoulder stretch, push-ups, and trunk lift. We will continue our school records for mile run, and our Annual Mander Mile Run race for 4th and 5th graders.
The Physical Education Department awards Star Salamanders and Star Classes each month. A boy and girl from each grade are selected as Star Salamanders based on their demonstration of excellent behavior, effort, and sportsmanship. Two Star Classes of the Month are also selected.
