Johanna Ayala-Walsh
Welcome, Students!
I am so excited to have you in my AP English or Dual Enrollment class this year! Two things you'll want to know about me before class beings: first, I have a dog named Sunday (my first ever!), and I love, love, love all things Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Handmaid's Tale, and --of course-- Marvel (sorry, DC!).
I moved to the northern Virginia area in 2015 after serving as the Director of a small private school in Juno, Beach FL (it was right on the beach, can you believe it?!). I am currently in my 12th year of teaching and am proud to serve as the current RRHS English Department Chair.
I obtained both a bachelor's and master's degree in English (British and Multicultural literary concentrations) from Florida Atlantic University, and a portion of my master's thesis was even published in the Journal of West Indian Literature (feel free to ask me about it). With two advanced degrees in English, you can tell that I have deep enthusiasm for the art of critical reading and writing. My goal as teacher is to help you see nuances and arrive at conclusions based on what a text does (and does not) communicate to become better readers and writers.
What can I say? You're going to love English!

I look forward to a great year with you!
