    About Me…

My name is Carinne Mills and this is my sixth year teaching 5th grade at Algonkian. I have previously taught 4th and 5th grade in Nashua, NH, and I have been working in the field of education for over 19 years.  I am really looking forward to working with my new fifth grade class. We have a lot of exciting things to look forward to, including flexible seating, Personalized Learning, D.A.R.E. and much more. I love teaching fifth grade and can't wait to learn from and along with you!

I grew up in the beautiful state of Michigan, also known as the Mitten State. After graduating from Western Michigan University, I moved to Washington, D.C., where I lived on Capitol Hill. I met and married my wonderful husband, who along with my family, made it possible for me to quit working and go back to school to pursue my dream of teaching.  In 1997, I graduated from George Mason University (Go Patriots!) with a Masters in Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction for Middle Grades 4-8. After having my second child, I decided to stay home and enjoy them while I could.  When my children entered elementary school at Forest Grove, I became very involved with the PTA as Vice-President, and then began working again as a PALS tutor, substitute teacher, long-term Kindergarten substitute, and Teaching Assistant. Now, my son, Colin, is a Junior in the School of Nursing at James Madison University.  My daughter, Keira, graduated from Park View High School this Spring and will also be attending JMU to study Psychology and criminology.  Goooo Duuuuuuukes!   We have two dogs; a really silly Boston terrier named Ziggy and a fun and energetic 7 month old puppy named Bentley. He is a Dutch Shepherd/Retriever mix.

As a student, I was not very confident in the subject of math. It turned out that all I needed was the right teacher to make me see how fun math could be. It's now my FAVORITE subject. My goal for this year is to make learning  FUN for my students, allowing them the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways, while maintaining a positive working environment. We learn a lot of interesting things in fifth grade and I am really looking forward to the opportunity to get to know each of my students. We will have a lot of great experiences and opportunities to learn and grow together in the months ahead.  If you have questions or concerns, please email me, Mrs. Mills.
