Hello Families of 2nd graders!
Each week, you will be receiving an email update about events and activities that are going on in our classrooms. These emails will let you know important dates as well as what topics we are covering in class. I will be notifying you of upcoming quizzes or tests as well, so you can be sure your child is preparing as needed. I will be posting all notes, study guides, and activities in Schoology. This information should also help when you're having dinnertime conversations! I know it is so typical of kids to reply "nothing" when you ask what they did at school that day. Now you'll be able to ask more specific questions to pull that information out of them!
It has been a very busy beginning of school adjusting to schedules and getting into a routine. It has been truly amazing getting to know your child, and I look forward to continuing to learn more this week!
Upcoming Events:
Friday, September 3rd - Labor Day Holiday! School will be closed for students and staff!
Monday, September 6th - Labor Day Holiday! School will be closed for students and staff!
What we will be learning this week in...
Math: We will be reviewing numbers through 120. Students will be practicing reading, writing and identifying numbers through 120. We will skip count by twos, fives, and tens, and recognize patterns.
Social Studies: Students will be starting out the year by learning about communities. We will describe community jobs in our classroom and how they will help our classroom run smoothly. We will discuss how citizens act respectfully and responsibly within our classroom community.
Reading: We will be selecting "just right" books for independent reading. Students will practice the 5 finger rule when choosing just the right books for themselves. Students will be making sure they know how to challenge themselves without going overboard.
Writing: Students will begin brainstorming for writing ideas by thinking about small moments that were memorable in their lives. This will help them provide interesting and important details to their writings as they learn to use detailed descriptions.
Word Study/Grammar Skills: This week, students will be taking a spelling inventory assessment to determine their word study level. We will be alternating word study weeks with a week of grammar or writing skill focus.
I am looking forward to a fantastic week with your students! If you ever have any questions or concerns, please email me immediately. I will do my best to get back with you as soon as possible. Have a great rest of your day, and I hope you enjoy your extended weekend holiday.!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fouch
