The Newbery Medal The 2012 Newbery Medal winner is Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos,
Fictional story of Jack Gantos' eventful summer in the small town of Norvelt, which is a literal dead end. When he finally emerges from his punishment of grounding, Jack lands a job as a writer of sorts, helping his arthritic neighbor, Miss Volker, write obituaries for the local paper. Jack notices, as do the police, that the town's elderly residents are dying off unusually fast.. It's an exciting summer for Jack.
